Ipswich Road - 1839 to 2005

This book of 35 pages might seem a small publication compared with some books on history, but it contains original research data on the subject.

It does not duplicate what has already been published on early Brisbane or Cobb & Co, but seeks to discover (with success) what routes travellers took from Brisbane to Ipswich from the early 1800s through to recent times. Included are early photographs and maps.

Archerfield Homestead By Noel Wallis

Archerfield Homestead was built by Henry Farley in the late 1870s on a site that is now Homestead Park in the Brisbane suburb of Forest Lake. It was a substantial building of two-stories and timber construction, yet its life was a mere forty years. Built on ground level, what termites did not destroy, the ravages of nature did. In 1881 the homestead and surrounding property were purchased by Michael 'Stumpy' Durack (the Duracks of Kimberly fame).
This book of 65 pages, tells the story of the homestead with text, drawings, photographs and property maps, and an adjacent dwelling which became known as the 'caretaker's cottage'. Sadly the homestead has passed from our physical sight but this publication enables us to capture a glimpse of this grand old lady of yesteryear.

SERVING TIME WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS By Noel Wallis

This book of 30 pages is really a trip back in time for the author as he was an employee at the Public Works factory for eight years. Adequate research has brought to light a disastrous fire in 1926 that destroyed much of two large, modern timber mills and joinery factories in Brisbane - one of which was the State Joinery Works and the other was Hancock and Gore.
This publication will bring back memories of what it was like for a teenage boy to leave primary school and to experience factory employment post WWII when there were few high schools around as there are today.
A good read.

A History of the Saint David's Welsh Society of Brisbane. 1918 - 2008
Compiler: Dr. Noel Wallis
ISBN 9781921555084 (pbk)

The details of this history have been carefully selected from a large body of material gathered by the main contributors, Dr Noel Wallis and Professor Dilwyn Griffiths. In script and photographic form, the story of the past 90 years of Saint David's Welsh Society of Brisbane is now available to the reader.

The story of Welsh immigration to this country needs to be set alongside of a wider migration of Celtic people in the 19th and 20th centuries. Many of these migrants remained in Australia at the end of their working life, and their children and children's children bear witness today to the contribution these early settlers made to this country.

Many of these Welsh folk found work in the mining industry whilst others settled on the land. Those of a later period contributed to commerce and education. Many became leaders in the community - some reached high positions in society, eg. the 'Premier' of a State.

Whilst not the whole story of Welsh settlement, and focused as it is on regional Brisbane, the challenge of this history is one to thrill the heart, and encourage a future generation with a 'Welshness' these early migrants possessed.

THE PURPOSE OF THE BOOK

Primarily, the purpose of this publication is to revisit concentration camps of the 20th century.
It is not a discussion for or against a particular interpretation of what has become known as "The Holocaust", nor does it labour on statistics concerning inmates in these camps - That information can be gleamed in the many publications on the subject.
My New Testament lecturer often said: "The truth of any matter is found between two extremes", and there is an extremity of views on "The Holocaust" from the extremists to the revisionist, and the canvas is wide as to what went on in the Nazi-controlled camps.
From the Old Testament record to Cambodian and Rwanda today, acts of genocide by one race against another have been committed.
For those who have not visited concentration camp sites, a reliance on the writings of those who have is essential to gain a descriptive picture of the places. This is what this publication tries to do.

‘REFLECTIONS ON THE SCENIC RIM’  –  Nil  ISBN  2011

This is a story of a ‘pilgrimage” to what Arthur Groom called ‘The Scenic Rim’ -the mountainous chain of peaks that stretched from Springbrook in the east to Cunningham’s Gap in the west - along the McPherson Range which forms the border between Queensland and New South Wales.
The author’s first hiking visit to this area was as a boy of twelve in 1946, to Binna Burra Lodge, until his most recent hike in 2011. Places that felt his footsteps were: Mount Hobwee, Ballanjui Falls (top & bottom), Ship’s Stern, Coomera Gorge, O’Reilly’s Mountain Retreat, Christmas Creek and surrounds, and Mount Mitchell to name a few.

The 55 page self-produced and published book is of limited print, with many colours and black-and-white photos/maps included.
