WHAT'S IN A BOAT NAME
by Linda Castle
(from the log of Jay-Em 2 - Gulf Cruise 2002)
This poem includes all the boats which were on the 2002 Gulf Cruise.
We came away on our first Gulf Trip, not sure what to expect, a
PANDORA box. It’s no ILLUSION,
this is PARADISE, a real DAZZY
BOBBLER of a trip and our SWEET CHARIOT
has swept
us away from the MOODY BLUE and EXECUTIVE
STRESS of work. Here we are sailing,
sailing, sailing across the sea. IT’S
MAGIC on the water. You go where you want, except
where
it’s WILD N WOOLY. There are NO
CORNERS out here. You are called upon by friends of
the air, the PACIFIC
GULL, the SWAN, the SANDPIPER,
GISELLE II, OSPREY
and her
OSPREY CHICK. They keep company every FARRLAPP
you travel offering their CANOPUS
of
protection but don’t be a SILENT NUMBER when they
call on the radio.
With friends, one is NEVER BLUE but in RHAPSODY.
We have all we need on board.
Our GREY NURSE
first aid kit is full of MEDINA and keeps
us out of all sorts of
MISCHIEF. The icebox is
well stocked –some items just increase the alcoholic PH LEVEL
while others give the senses a bit of TANTIVY
There are so many people in boats out here, and so many names, but are they girl
names
or boy names or who knows what names? Girls like
ELLENES, NARINA. Boys like
ELLIOTT, MAVERICK
and MACK, but what about AMARANTE,
ELYSIUM,
JAY-EM II, OBERON, PELORUS, RUBICON, WINDARA & ISLANDER
III.
Names which can only be described as DEBONAIR.
Does the skipper of ADAM’S
APPLE get his apples
from APPLEDOOR II and is there something in the
name of
FIFI IV that helps them catch fish? The
variety of names is AMAZING.
On shore you can find a feed with the locals. Just ask any
BILBO BAGGINGS
where to go. He’ll give you the address of the OM
SHANTHI offering the ULTIMO
of
selections. Fish, steak, SWEET’N’SOUR it’s all
there. You can start with a glass
of SHIRAZ, a
SCOTCH MIST, try a GIN &
TONIC or two and later progress to
PORT’N’COFFEE
or even CHEESE’N’BIKKIES. Maybe you are
looking for pokies
hoping to WINSOME II money but
there are better ways to have fun. If you really
love your Port, sample it until
late! Just make sure that you don’t disturb the
neighbours trying to catch a
little MOONLIGHT SONATA or maybe they will
really
become the title of DRAGON LADY.
So what’s in a
boat name? Sometimes so much,
sometimes so little, a name, a place, a feeling,
something SPECIAL TO YOU !
and something the rest of us wonder about!
