Gold at World Championship Selections

Byron Coleborne and Ben Nicholson were the only Queenslanders to win Gold at the recent National Selections in Sydney on 4th February.

Both Byron and Ben won team selection to complete at the 18th World Championships in Beijing China.  Byron (Heavy Weight) has only returned to training 9 months ago after a 4 year layoff.  A broken arm in Aussie Rules pursuaded Byron that Taekwondo was much safer.  Byron had 4 matches and won all of them.

Ben Nicholson had 3 fights and won all to win the Middle weight division.  After coming so close for so many years, Ben decided to move to Melbourne last year where he has been training with one of Australia's premier clubs MTC.  Ben also travelled to Poland late last year where he trained with the Polish National team.  He also competed in a number of European open events.

The World Championships will be from the 18-22 May 2007.  We will keep you posted in the boys preparation for the event.

Evert du Plessis narrowly missed out selection by losing the final in sudden death.  After a 3 year absence from competition, Evert surprised us winning 3 fights and making it all the way to the final.  After regulation time, the score was tied at 4 all with the favourite Mahir from Victoria.  In the fourth round, fatigue set in and a tactical error cost us the match.  Evert paid tribute to his mate Daniel Bennett.  Daniel 23 a Triathlon competitor die of a heart attack earlier this year whilst riding his bike in training.

Also competing was Ben Hartmann who won a bronze medal and Louise Port who lost by one point in the elimination rounds.

Bronze at the Youth Olympics

Tamara Bingham from Currumbin won 1 or only 2 Bronze medals by a Queenslander at the AYOF (Australian Youth Olympic Festival).  The event which is sponsored by the AOC is held every 2 years at Sydney's Olympic park is a multi sport international event for Juniors aged 14 - 17 years.  This year there were 15 sports including swimming, gymnastics, diving, table tennis, and of course Taekwondo.  In the Taekwondo competition there were 6 countries - Australia, China, Great Britain, NZ, Oceania and Chinese Taipei.

Tamara won selection from her success at the Nationals in Adelaide last year.  Tamara's sister Samantha was also selected, but a knee injury sustained at the nationals has forced her to sit on the sideline till July this year.

In the lead up to the AYOF, Tamara trained nearly everyday over Christmas with the guys at Currumbin.  Tamara lost her first fight to Chinese Taipei but then won the repercharge to claim the Bronze medal.    At 14, Tamara was one of the youngest competitors and had to fight girls almost 3 years older.
