Introduction

This is the budget for the item reminder being designed by Saturn Automated Systems. The budget includes both the costing of the hardware to build the item reminder and also the costing of the labour needed to design and build the item reminder.

Manufacturing Costs

The item reminder is going to use solid state devices because of there very low cost and because they operate at a very low voltage (about 12V – 15V). Therefore it is going to need a transformer that converts 240V AC to 12V DC which will cost about $15.00.
So that the idea reminder can tell what items have been forgotten we are going to use RFID tags, this will be at a cost of $32.00 for a RFID Card reader Module and $2.00 for each RFID tag.
The information will be displayed on a LED screen. An LCD screens will cost $50.00.
The item reminder will be controlled using a microcontroller. A PIC16F877 microcontroller will cost $30.00.

Other small costs will include:

•  A number of ICs which will cost about $2 - $5 each.
•  A number of switches for configuring the item reminder will cost about $1.00 each.
•  An alarm which will sound when an item is forgotten. This will cost about $2.00.
•  A temperature sensor, at a cost of $5.00, so that the item reminder can include a jacket on a cold day.

Summary:

$50.00 (LCD)
$30.00 (Microcontroller)
$40.00 (RFID tags and module)
$15.00 (Power supply)
$40.00 (Other Costs)
= $175.00 (under our budget of $200, an extra $25 for unseen costs)

Labour Costs

Team contributions:

Team member's contributions are charged at $120/hour. It is import for the success of the item reminder that the team has regular meeting to discuss the progress of the item reminder. If a meeting was held every fortnight and on average 7 of the 8 members make it to each meeting over the 26 weeks when it will come to a cost of $10920. Then if each member was to complete an average of one hour a week in there own time that would come to $24960. Therefore the total cost due to team member's contributions comes to $35880.

Budgeting in an extra $1400 will give an extra 12 hours spare if the item reminder takes longer the build then expected.

Workshops:

The workshop is an important part in the construction of the prototype item reminder. It is charged at $75/hour. We will be taking full advantage of the time we have in the workshop and therefore will be using all $1000/session. That is equal to 13 hours a session of workshop time.

Consultations:

We have consultations with our mentor which are charged at $200/hour and they are limited at $400/session. This means that there is only 4 hours a year that we can meet with our mentor outside of our weekly meetings.

Summary:

$35800 + (Team contributions)
$1400 + (Extra Time)
$2000 + (Workshop)
$800 5 (Consultations)
= $40000.
