At SaTaMu my dogs are all part
of my family. They live in the house with me and have freedom of the back
yard as well. I am aiming to breed Chinese Cresteds that meet my picture
of the breed: hairless or veil coated, deer type, sound and healthy, good
temperaments and free from genetic problems. Currently my cresteds are
undergoing eye testing (lens luxation and PRA) and x-rays (hips, shoulders,
elbows and knees). As all of these tests will have been carried out before
mating I can feel confident that at that time my dogs are free from inherent
problems. To see the current results of these tests, please refer to each
of my cresteds.
It took me about eighteen months to decide on which small breed of dog
to buy (I had previously only had large dogs, so this was a new area for me, and
various other conditions weren't quite right for another dog). I had been
regularly searching through 'all breed' books and kept coming back to the
Chinese Crested as the ideal breed to met my needs. I continued to try to
talk myself out of the breed as I thought they would be difficult to locate
(they were) and cost an arm and a leg (not necessarily). It didn't work!
Finally, in late 1998, I began the search for a breeder who had a bitch,
either puff or hairless (I was after the personality), that would be old enough
for me to get at the beginning of my five and a half week holidays - I wanted to
be able to bond and begin training my new puppy. Many phone calls to many
states later, I found my puppy. She was a powder puff that was of show
quality. I had considered showing my larger dogs over the years, but it
just never seemed to happen, but I thought I may as well give it a go. At
just over the age of eighteen months my little Mu Lan (Aust Ch Mexicatl Cinnamon
Puff) gained her Australian Championship - I was so excited. Inspite of
me, she did it!
The Chinese Crested is a very addictive breed, ask anyone that has one. I
was fortunate enough to be offered a spectacular palomino hairless male, Taz
(Aust Ch Silkvale Just A Gigolo) from Keith and Bev Rose. After much
thought and little available information I decided to mate my two Cresteds.
Mu Lan was a fantastic mum, she free whelped six adorable puppies, one
male puff, one male hairless, one female puff and three female hairless. I
kept the male hairless and the oldest female hairless, with the remaining
puppies going to the most loving of homes. The new owners regularly keep
in touch with me to let me know how the 'babies' are doing and I just love
receiving pics of their latest antics. This was my dragon litter - named
after elements of Chinese dragons.
I am hoping to breed a litter in 2003 so am keeping an eye out for the 'right'
male or female for either of my two 'babies'.
MY COLLECTION
As I have become extremely involved with the breed, I have begun a collection of
items of original old prints, limited editions and original art works. The
following are a small example of the works I have in my collection.
