This event,
organised by Bicycle Victoria, was one of the most spectacular rides I have
participated in. New Zealand's South Island is beautiful. From high mountain
passes to rides along open plains, past glaciers that reach down to the
sea and along rugged windswept coastline.
The ride started
in Christchurch but I picked it up in Queenstown. This is truly a stunning
place. Situated on a large lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

This must be
the adventure capital of the world! Bungee jumping, jet skiing, para gliding
off the top of mountains. Too much to do in one day. From there we rode
inland for a couple of days and then across the Haast Pass, a steep climb
but short across the mountain range dividing the South Island. After a leisurely
60 km ride we reached the sea on the West coast. It was quite rugged and
windy but the countryside was beautiful.
Riding along
the coast road we stopped at the town of Fox Glacier which is at the foot
of the glacier of the same name. It virtually extends almost to sea level.
Amazing. Next day on to Hokitika, we passed the Franz Joseph glacier. After
Hokitika we rode on to Greymouth and then turned inland for the dreaded
Arthurs Pass which would take us back to Christchurch.
I did not heed
the warnings of more experienced tourers who suggested that my racing gears
would not be suitable for such a climb, I managed to get about half way
up the climb, and several of the many switchbacks before I stalled; literally.
I was doing a "track stand" and could not move forward!
I had to swallow
my pride, admit my gearing was wrong and walk about 100 metres to a flat
car park with a lookout where I could finally remount the bike for the last
section which I managed to make without having to get off again. Now that
was a steep climb!
The run down
to Christchurch was fantastic; nearly a full day of descending, unbelievable.
