Each year since 1987, teams of cyclists ride from one of three designated locations on the Murray River in southern Australia (Mildura, Swan Hill or Echuca) to Port Fairy on the Moyne River, an historic whaling town in Victoria's south west, to raise money for various helath related charities.
The ecent is run as a relay with teams of riders sharing the work. Each team is allowed a support crew with a car or van able to follow each group of riders on the road. The distance covered is around 520 km and the event is run non-stop to a place called Hamilton where riders arrive in the early hours on the morning.
From there, a new start time is allocated for each team & the ride continues to Port Fairy where thousands of spectators and supporters greet the teams as they ride in.
History of the Murray To Moyne
The Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay began in 1987 when a team of women challenged the Port Fairy Apex Club and another team of local Port Fairy identities to ride in relay from Mildura to Port Fairy in 24 hours to raise money for the Port Fairy Hospital.
In 1987 the teams raised $10,000 and in 2002, 1650 riders representing 150 teams raised over $900,000 for hospitals and health related organisations in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.
