Recently current Examining Officer Bob Evans indicated he did not wish to continue in the role. Long time volunteer engineman Ian Campbell offered his services.
Ian has a wealth of experience in the rail industry and is ideally qualified to take over from Bob.
At a recent Board meeting Ian's appointment was ratified.
Ian will take over shortly.
Bob intends to keep driving and assisting in developing training programs for current and new enginemen.
The Board is particularly indebted to Bob for his dedication and contribution to the role.
We threw a few last month with the term "operating envelope"
Its one of those buzz word phrases that mean the area within which the rolling stock operates. If you take the external dimensions of the rolling stock, that external dimension is the operating envelope. If you stand near or in that envelope you'll more than likely get struck by the rolling stock.
They are still in McKay!!
As HMAS Cerberus doesn't have any road vehicles large enough to get both the complete and the incomplete ones here to Belgrave the Navy has approached the Army to help.
It has now become a joint exercise which requires approval from the Defence liaison group in Canberra. At present we are waiting on that approval.
Thelma Cotter has chosen to leave us and as a consequence a vacancy exists in our retail area.
Applications to April Williams asap.
A gentleman's gentleman, teacher, engineman extraordinaire.
Reg passed away suddenly on April 14th.
For over 20 years enginemen grew up being examined and re-examined by Reg for certificates of competence.
A caring approach, wicked sense of humour and extremely competent he made a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to meet him and for those who worked with him he was the consummate professional.
Our sympathy to wife Helene and family
Our English visitor Bob Heath has donated some lights for the loco running shed.
At last we can see where things are Bob!!
Who can forget the winds of April 2nd</p>
The Board recognises the very significant contribution made by Andrew Wheatland who spent an enormous amount of time behind the scenes keeping our level crossings and communications running as best he could under near impossible circumstances.
Also thanks to Jason Bell, Simon Kilner and Chris Adams who removed a constant stream of fallen tress and debris. In fact it was well done to everyone involved in running trains that day.

As you are all aware, the winter and Influenza season is once again upon us. As staff and volunteers are exposed to the public on a daily basis there is a small risk of picking up the Influenza.
As a service to both staff and volunteers, the Board is offering free Influenza vaccinations to hopefully provide some protection.
The vaccination consists of a single injection during autumn. The vaccination is well tolerated with usually only minor local side effects. It does NOT cause a minor case of the 'flu, as is often (incorrectly) stated. It is highly effective in protecting against the epidemic flu, but will not prevent the common cold, an illness with lesser symptoms, which is often confused with the in flu. Please note that this flu vaccine does not cover "Bird flu", but is recommended to protect against all flu-like illness. Research is still being conducted to produce a bird flu vaccine.
If you would like to receive this seasons vaccination Dr Steven Kaye will be attending at Moondarra Belgrave on Thursday the 15th May 10 am to 11.30 am
Could you please advise Susan Ham by Monday 12th May either by leaving a message on e-mail sue.ham@pbr.org.au
Important! If you have an allergy to eggs or feathers, you may also have a reaction to the vaccine; we would advise checking with your local GP if you have any doubts.
There's something special about a trip on a steam train on a crisp winter's evening, especially under a full moon. On the evening of Monday, June 16th, the sounds of the exhaust beat and shrill steam whistle of locomotive 7A will echo throughout the hills and valleys of the Dandenong Ranges, as it hauls a short consist from Belgrave to Gembrook and return.
The train will depart Belgrave at 6.00pm, and after a spirited run, with perhaps a stop or two deep in the forest (unique photo opportunities!!), should arrive at Gembrook at about 8.00pm, in time for a hot dinner at Gembrook station. Warming medicinal beverages are strongly recommended, as is rugging up for the cold.
Some travellers from previous trips have indicated that they would prefer an earlier finish, so two travel options have been provided for the return trip - train or mini-bus, which Dan O'Connor has generously offered to drive. (You must request this option when purchasing tickets). Departure from Gembrook is scheduled for 9.00pm, with the bus arriving back at Belgrave at 9.30pm, and the train at about 11.00pm. All proceeds from the trip will be directed to the heritage rolling stock restoration fund, a very worthwhile project indeed.
Tickets for the evening are an absolute bargain, at just $45 including dinner, with no concessions. Passenger numbers are strictly limited for this trip, so don't muck about! For bookings, contact the lovely ladies at Belgrave and don't forget to book your bus ticket home if required. For further information, contact tour organiser Nick Anchen.

Thank you to all those volunteers who have offered their assistance for this major fund raising event. Race results will be available on the Puffing Billy website after the event.
Over 7,800 patrons enjoyed our Autumn season of a 'Day Out With Thomas'. Thank you to everyone who volunteered for this event - 'Thomas' is a big commitment, but it certainly has its rewards as seen by the smiles on the young ones faces (as well as well as on Russ Bowen's when he's checking the figures!)
The Spring season of Thomas will take place on:
Should you wish to volunteer on a 'Thomas' day, please contact Di Gadsden on email di.gadsden@pbr.org.au.

Well as I've been indicating for some months now I am off again on the last stage of my around Aussie covering all the existing passengers rail lines left. I won't go into detail as I covered most in a previous issue of "Monthly News", as Bill Russell recently said, "all 14 chapters". Well all the best and see you all upon my return in July.

To date approximately 6,700 sleepers have been replaced and three bridges completed (out of 6). Remaining Trackwork involves laying track on the bridges and culverts as they are completed and tamping and lining it. Concrete foundations are being repaired for the remaining three bridges and their steelwork is in the process of being fabricated. For a good coverage of the work have a look at www.hothamvalleyrailway.com.au and check the News section.
Moorooduc Signalbox has had its signalling equipment re-installed (Thanks to Herb and Peter) and awaits sub-contractors to re-build the staircase to meet current building regulations along with connection of power and water and a final external paint.
Piers 11 to 31 have now been repaired by replacement of piles, braces, walers and crossheads. This completes work on the piers on the Down side of Curdies River and work will commence in May on Piers 1-10 on the Up side of the river. Our aim is to complete the structure ready for decking by the end of November.
All materials are now on hand and we await approval of the Material Change Application currently with Public Transport Safety Victoria before commencing installation.
We have a small contract to install approximately 55m of 3'6" gauge track at the Sorrento Tramway station. The tramway opened in 1890 and was closed in 1921 and the station overlooking Sorrento Pier is being restored with a re-built platform and track. We expect to do this work in mid May.

The Railways' archives group have been quite busy since the beginning of the year. We work at Kings Road, Emerald each Monday. We have attended a couple of seminars presented by the Public Records Office of Victoria. These have been on subjects that will assist in the handling o, care and preservation of the Railways' archives. We have two new additions to our workforce, Margaret and Ken Whatman have joined us and have taken on the task of sorting, copying and storage of our Newspaper Clippings, some of which go back a far as the 1040's. Chas Bevan is assisting with this task.
At the instigation of Brenda Saunders, we arranged two displays in conjunction with the recent P.A.V.E. festival at Emerald.
The first, at the Emerald Library displayed for ten days a small sample of our artefacts in a showcase with descriptive labels. This aroused quite a bit of interest resulting in us being asked to present another showing there later in the year.
The second, a photographic display titled "Emerald Station through the ages" was presented at Lakeside over two days and included photographs recently acquired by our archives. We must thank Society President, John Thompson for his very professional enhancement of these pictures and the mounting them for their display.
The comments and interest shown by the passengers and our train crews were most complimentary and prompt us to consider arranging similar displays of photographs of each of our stations.
Ted Godwin, Geoff Tasker and Kevin Taig spend each Tuesday at the Public Records Office researching the construction of the Fern Tree Gully to Gembrook line and are discovering some very interesting details. Some of their findings will provide material for articles in "Narrow Gauge" and also inclusion in our Archives.
