This is the only siding on this railway not to have changed its layout, although the siding was raised at the down end to make it flatter..
The siding points were locked by a staff lock. (See Clematis Yard for a discussion of staff locks.)
The VR appendix to the Rules & Regulations contain the following operating instructions for this siding.
Nobelius Siding is situated on a heavy falling grade (1 in 40), and before the engine is detached from the train at this siding, the hand Brakes on all trucks on the portion of the train left standing on the Running Line must be securely screwed down; in addition the Hand Brake in the Guard's Van must be applied.
From the diagram it is obvious that the siding could only be worked by up trains (from Lakeside). This was not unusual, although it did impose operating restrictions. Empty vans from Upper Ferntree Gully would be left at Cockatoo for transfer by the next train.
