Emerald has seen almost constant changes in its yard layout since it was re-opened as the temporary terminus of the restored line in 1965. The diagram on the left shows the station as it was for most of the VR period.
The yard layouts here are only brief snapshots. As Emerald has the most vacant land of any station, it was a logical place to build the carriage repair workshops.
The third diagram shows the extension of the yard and the addition of several sidings. The number of derelict vehicles collected for restoration meant that an extension siding "rotten road" was needed.
In 1990 a turntable was provided to allow the locomotives to be turned to even wheel wear. (The balloon loop at Beech Forest was built for the same purpose.) Normally locomotives on the narrow gauge run in reverse for the return journey, although for the first few years on the Moe-Walhalla line 1A ran with the funnel towards Moe..
