Bumper Tail Light Repair

The rear tail and indicator lights located in the rear bumper bar of the GU Patrols are a real pain.  After a few knocks of the bumper the 'alligator' clips work there way off the tabs on the rear of the light assembly. A few more knocks and the tabs themselves will brake.  This leaves the light assembly dislodged with no way of retaining it.  The following fix is just one of many ways that may be employed to resolve this issue and should only take 1 hour.

Materials Required

- 4 x 'panel' clips and screws.
- black paint.
- drill & bit.
- Phillips head screw drivers.

Procedure

  1. Remove the rear bumper light assembly.  Note the missing and damaged tabs on the rear of the removed light assembly. Mine was hanging out anyway!
  2. I used 'panel retaining clips' because I had some lying around from my old MQ.  These will slide over the bumper and clamp the bumper as the screw is tightened.  I used two on each assembly as this will retain the lights while still allowing flex when the bumper is hit again.
Determine the approximate position of the clips so that they can be inserted as far as possible onto the bumper without being visible when the light assembly is in place.
Remove any tabs from the assembly that will interfere with the clips.
Insert the light assembly and mark the position.
    Remove the assembly and clips.
Reinsert the assembly and in the position marked drill through the assembly and the bumper.
    Remove assembly.
Refit clips onto bumper making sure the clip holes line up with the new holes in the bumper.
  3. Refit assembly.
Insert screws and tighten.  Do not over tighten as this will distort the assembly.
  4. For neat finish, paint screws black to match light assembly.
