The Merrigans

Pam & Norm Merrigan provide workshops on a number of traditional instruments, session experience and slow jams for beginners, dancing, and participation activities for young people in a variety of folk and traditional music. Pam Merrigan is a music educator with a MMus degree (UNSW) and over 20 years experience in the music teaching field.

Instrument Workshops:

Button Accordion - push/draw style. 

Participants will require a melodeon style button accordion - C#/D, D/D#, D/G or A/D/G.

 

Irish Whistle - beginner and intermediate. 

Participants will require a reasonable quality "D" whistle.

Beginner: This workshop focuses on "getting started" -  holding position & getting the notes; breathing, starting and controlling the note; some simple first tunes; breathing in context. Participants will also receive a "music survival kit" (page containing some basic music info. & some starter tunes).

Intermediate: This workshop is for players who have already mastered the basic techniques of getting a sound out of their instrument and already know a few tunes - focuses on "demystifying" jigs & reels; ornamentation and how to build this into the context of a tune. Participants will receive copies of tunes covered in the workshop.

 

Guitar - beginner. 

Participants required to provide their own instrument.

This workshop focuses on easy chords & chord progressions, basic strumming techniques and simple accompaniment in duple, triple and quadruple meter.

"Slow Jam" Workshops:

Irish Music: The Session Experience

Participants required to provide their own instrument.

Covers basic rudiments in most traditional instruments, some easy tunes to get you started, and the opportunity to play with experienced musicians. Also focuses on simple accompaniment techniques & rhythms for jigs, reels and polkas.

 

Bush Music: The Big Bush Band

Participants required to provide their own instrument.

The focus is mainly on getting musicians started to play for bush dancing - types of tunes, organising music into sets.

Dance workshops for all ages:

A wide repertoire of Australian and Celtic dances drawn from the Irish Ceili, Scottish Country and Australian Bush & Colonial traditions, to new dances being created in the traditional style and dances from the Americas.

Participation activities for young people in a variety of folk traditions:

Australian tradition.

Songs, stories & music from the Australian tradition caters for young people from age 6 to junior primary level. Duration approx. 30-45mins. 

 

African rhythms.

This workshop is suitable for upper primary and lower secondary level. Participants will learn and perform a simple African song with polyrhythmic accompaniment.  

 

Latin rhythms.

This workshop is suitable for upper primary and lower secondary level.

 

Group guitar sessions.

Participants required to provide their own instrument.

This workshop is suitable for upper primary and lower secondary level with very little or no previous guitar experience.
