trials began in Switzerland by the PTT around the year 1980, but were preceded by demonstration cards. The first card design was not adopted, and is known both encoded, and unencoded:The next demo card features the more familiar design, but has a 3 digit batch number '519'. This card is punched. The same design was reprinted as a demo card with 00 prefix followed by 6 digits. See my study on
demo and trial card serial numbers. The second demo card has the number 00 211 835. Both cards are very rare:After these demos, probably issued approximately 1979, and 1982 respectively, the D1 was issued on a larger scale, about 1982/1983. It has the control 'C0' followed by 6 digits:
Around the same time a 20 frank card was also used, but with much smaller printings. The first of these is the famous green 'Telemat' card, followed by the same design in red. Much less well known is the later 20 frank card with the same control as the Telemat cards. All have the C1 control followed by 6 digit number! :
Red TELEMAT needed
After this it seems the red 20 frank card was designed to resemble the 10 frank public issue. A design demonstration was produced without encoding maybe 1984/1985, the museum card has number 00 299 963, and is probably the earliest 2mm thermo banded card:
After this the story is already catalogued by 'Hobi'.
