A club scribe's report of our first A.G.M.
CEMENTCO BOWLING CLUB - DARRA
Greetings readers, this being our first contribution to this worthy journal.
The infant Cementco Club feels it is past the teething stage, having on 13th August held our first annual general meeting, barely eight months after the inaugural meeting of prospective members. At that meeting, provisional officers and council were appointed to get things moving. Elected for three months, all were re-appointed for the remaining portion of the financial year, and the balance sheet presented at the first annual meeting, and the general condition of the green, club house and club affairs generally, accomplished in so short a time is a credit and tribute to their efforts, well done provisional council and officers.
There being only two bowlers on the roll, theirs was the task of selectors. They have had a man-size job of work selecting, coaching and organising. Their helpful advice and encouragement is showing good results and we say many thanks to Les Baistow and Harry Ferritt.
Leo Jones, as Green Director, has watched and nursed the green along like a proud mother with her first babe, and he has good cause to feel the satisfaction of a job well done. At the turn of the winter season all rinks are in good shape and have steadily improved since we put them into play last February.
I am sure Leo would be the last man to take all the credit to himself, he would like to give full marks to our greenkeeper Bill Walker whose conscientious application to the job of nursing a new green and keeping it in playing order through its first winter does him proud.
Our official opening day on May 21st was a great success and is a day on which we all look back with pride and pleasure. Dolph Brook as first President and now re-appointed, carried the weight of his responsibilities in a manner which could not fall to impress the many and distinguished visitors who attended. Now with the fledglings all eager to stretch their wings, our selectors are getting down to the job of organising competitions and home matches, and will be happy to receive invitations from clubs who would like to exchange rinks with us.
The officials and Council for the ensuing year are:-
President Mr. A.R. Brook
Vice Presidents Messrs. L.J. Baistow and G.L. Norup
Secretary Mr. J.L. Rodger
Treasurer Mr. P.J. Pickard
Council Messrs. H. Ferritt, F. Hansen,
A.F. Wallis, W. Pohlman, H. Humphris
Q.B.A. Delegate Mr. L.J. Jones
Match Selectors Messrs. L.J. Baistow, L.J. Jones and
H. Ferritt
Press Correspondent Mr. F. Hansen
The Club's Patrons, are the Directorate of the Queensland Cement & Lime Coy. Ltd. Messrs. P.J. Symes, A.E. Axon, A.C. Elphinstone, N. Jameson J.F.Brett, and Mr. D.S. Geary (Manager).
To these gentlemen "Cementco" Bowling Club owes its existence, as it was here that the idea of building a bowling green as a social amenity for the company's employees first took shape, and due to their splendid views on industrial relationship, the green was constructed, Club House provided and handed over to the Club, when established, for self management. Although primarily for the social recreation of Company staff, a broader outlook is evidenced in the fact that membership is not restricted to employees only. Our roll of members now stands at 89 of whom 30 are in no way connected with the Company.
Cementco feels proud of its origin and confidence in its future.
