WWW Page Design
Welcome to my WWW pages. My name is Bill Russell and I design web pages.
You can design Web pages.
Many people design their own web pages. Some use programs that claim to do the same. Below are ten principles that should be considered:
- The aim is to communicate. If your site does not communicate you have failed. Communication is the reason for a web site.
- Know what you want to say, say it clearly and make it pertinent. Avoid flowery language with extraneous words.
- Choose a font and size that are easy to read. Choose colours that are easy to read. Remember some people are colour blind. The style of your page should reflect your purpose.
- Layout your pages so that they are easy to navigate. Large blocks of text are hard to read. (This is why numbered lists were invented.)
- Any graphics must be relevant. They should also be easy to see, quick to load and small enough to see without scrolling the page.
- Remember the "H" in HTML is Hypertext. Hypertext links enable your reader to navigate around your pages easily. Use them, but always make it easy to return to a menu.
- Use menus for navigation. Make the target text short and meaningful. If necessary break your menu into sub-menus. Try to keey your menus short, for if you have more than six items in a menu you risk overloading your reader. (You may have more than six items, but be wary.)
- Be wary of using special third-party effects. Some readers object to loading such programs on their computer, and hence they will not read all of your site.
- If you must use frames, javascript or similar provide an alternative for those who do not wish to have their computer use them. Such people may be missing out on the good things of life, but it is their computer.
- Remember KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid. The aim is to communicate.
You may decide that you would like some professional advice. Read on.
