Mary Nash
(1838 - 1900)
and
her husband George Newman
Labourer and Shepherd of Northern New South Wales
Mary Nash was
the daughter of George Nash and Mary Lees
and was the third generation in the female line to be given the
name Mary. She was born in 1838 at her parents' farm
in Londonderry Parish, north-east of Castlereagh NSW and joined
her family in their relocation to the Windsor district in the
late 1840's and then to Hartley in the mid-1850's. Mary
was residing at Mt York near Hartley when she had an illegitimate
child born in 1859.
In 1861 Mary
married George Newman at Hartley. George was born in Sydney
in 1841 and was baptised a year later as "George James
Newman". He was the son of convict John Newman (who
was transported as "John Newman Houldman" per Princess
Royal 1823) and orphan Elizabeth Turner, who was born
in Sydney c1804-6.
In the forty
years after their marriage, the Newman family travelled the
countryside, with George working primarily as a labourer although
occasionally as a shepherd and bushman. Birth and death
certificates for George and Mary's children record that the
family was residing in Hartley until early 1863, in Parramatta in
April 1863, in South Creek [St Mary's] near Penrith in January
1865, in Blackheath in April 1865, at Bells Line in January 1866,
near Wellington in October 1866, near Dubbo in March 1868, at
Manilla in 1871, near Warialda in August 1874, and near Narrabri
from 1877 to 1880. Later records indicate that they were
residing at Bomera near Coonabarabran in 1896, and in Warren
where Mary died in 1900.
George
continued his travels after Mary's death and eventually settled
at Goodiwindi on the Queensland border where he died in 1927.
