Farmer and carrier in Llandilo, and retailer of Penrith NSW

George Nash was born in 1827 probably at the farm of his grandmother Maria Nash on the Nepean River near Castlereagh.  His parents George Nash and Mary Lees had only recently taken possession of land in Londonderry parish north-east of Castlereagh at that time, where they settled shortly afterwards.  George was residing in the South Creek district [St Mary's] near Penrith and apparently working as a farmer when he married Eliza Thomson in 1854.

Eliza Thomson (1834-1908) was the daughter of Frederick Thomson, a wheelwright, and his wife Charlotte Douglass of Richmond.  Frederick's parents, James and Eliza Thomson from London, England, had arrived as free settlers per William Pitt in 1806 with Frederick born shortly afterwards, while Charlotte Douglass' parents, Thomas Douglass from Hertfordshire, and Sarah Pearce from Hampshire, had both arrived as convicts in 1801 on board the Canada and Nile respectively.

George Nash worked as a farmer and carrier in the 1850's and 1860's and resided with his family on a leased farm in the Llandilo district, north of St Mary's.  By 1870 the family had settled in Penrith where George established a successful drapery business.  In 1872 they relocated their business to "Railway House" on the north-west intersection of High and Lawson Streets, where they remained for fourteen years until deciding to retire in 1886.  With the profits from their business they purchased Charles York's 56-acre grant at Emu Plains which lay between Old Bathurst Road and the Nepean River and which they named "Carthona".

Retirement was only to last for five years.  In 1891 George purchased "Penrith House" in Penrith which lay on the south side of High Street between Castlereagh and Evans Streets, where he established a successful general store.  George and Eliza remained in business there until 1899 when George died suddenly at Penrith.  "Penrith House" was taken over by their son John who carried on the business until his untimely death in 1916.  Eliza died in 1908 at "Carthona", Emu Plains.
