Esther Nash
(1831 - 1874)
and
her husbands John Warrington and George Bailey
of the districts of Penrith, Hartley, Inverell and Armidale, NSW
Esther Nash was the eldest daughter of George Nash and Mary Lees and was born in 1831 at her parents's farm in the Parish of Londonderry, north-east of Castlereagh NSW. She relocated with her family to the Windsor district in the late 1840's where she married John Warrington in 1849. John and Esther were residing at South Creek [St Mary's] near Penrith when their only child was born in 1850. John was working as a labourer at that time.
No further information has been located for John Warrington to date. No trace of his birth or arrival in Australia has been found nor any references to him after the baptism of his son in 1850. All that has been determined is that he probably died in the early-mid 1850's.
Esther had settled near her parents in the Hartley district by 1856 and was recorded as a widow when she married George Bailey in 1863. George was the son of John Bailey and his wife Sarah Rutter and was born c1833 in Whitechurch, Hampshire, England, according to his marriage certificate.
George Bailey worked as a labourer then as a miner in the Hartley district in the 1860's. In the early 1870's the Bailey family relocated to the Inverell district where George also worked as a miner. He settled on "selected" land at Gilgai in 1873, although continuing to work as a miner. Esther died there early in 1874.
Soon afterwards George relocated to the Armidale district where he continued to work as a miner. He married widow Elizabeth Craven in 1877 and had a son George Henry Bailey born in 1879 at Armidale. Elizabeth Craven was the daughter of Gabriel and Mary Nixon and was born in 1847 at West Maitland. She married Edward Craven in Armidale in 1870 and had three children prior to her husband's death.
George Bailey was working as a labourer and residing in Armidale in 1885 however no further confirmed references to him have been located to date.
This is a brief summary of the chapter relating to Esther Nash and her husbands published in Nash: First Fleeters and Founding Families - A Three Generational Biographical History.
