The Possum Emerger…
Bob McKinleys Recipe for Possum Emergers
MATERIALS.
Tail- Soft brown feather fibre
Hook _ 10 – 14 Kamasan B100, fine.
Thread – Black – head to middle of bend.
Body – very slim – dark brown and fine wire or metallic metal wire –
blue.
Wing - Bunch of possum
Thorax of dark brown seals fur.
The possum emerger is a little slippery sucker to tie. I have plenty of
prototypes for the annual dinner next year. Some will be unsinkable and some
will be like torpedos.
Its just a matter of getting the proportions right and also not trying to tie
them up at midnight, especially while sipping on Port!
According to Bob…
Keep in mind, most trout will be mayfly feeders and take on the move, they
will rarely examine the fly too closely.
The critical factor is getting it to float with the thorax at and just under
the surface, its too heavy for the thorax to be above the water and that is not
what we want. Try all patterns in a glass of water. Other materials can be used
for any of the components such as metallic thread of differing colours, tail of
any soft material, the tail needs to be soft to give it movement. The wing can
be made from any good floating material but needs to be approximately the right
colour. These flies are hard to see on water. Some people put variations on the
wing to increase visibility. Small sizes will be taken for other hatches such as
midges etc.
