Pat O’Keefe’s Recipe for Loch style flies.

Point fly, The Buzzer.

MATERIALS.

Abdomen, Brown silk

Wrap, copper wire

Body, Build up brown silk

Wing, orange part of pheasant tail

Wind thread beyond the hook bend and continue to about half way on hook curve. Tie in copper and wind silk back to body. Wrap copper to body. Adjust hook in midge head adapter if necessary.

Tie in pheasant tail, orange side of pheasant tail fibres facing in.

Flip hook over and tie in other side of wing case. Builb up the body a little.

Fold the wing case over on one side and then the other.

This will mean that the orange side of the fibres are now facing out.  Tie off and varnish.

An orange case can be replaced as a substitute as shown.

This is similar to the one tied by Andrew Scott, the Super Glue Fly.

Middle Fly, Pat’s Dial back.

MATERIALS.

Tail, pheasant tips.

Body, peacock

Throat, Red fibre tippets

Hook, size 12-14

Tie on pheasant tail, wind silk to front of hook. I use a size 8 silk and don’t forget to leave a little space at the eye so that you can tie on a little head. Tie on peacock hurl, use the eye if you can find it. Tie silk to bend and return back to eye.

Wrap on hurl to form a neat body. Tie off. Add a small throat of red fibre tippets and trim. Add a drop of varnish and don’t forget to clean the eye out.

LOCH STYLE TECHNIQUE

Leader length - 18ft made up of the first 6ft of 15lb trace, the next 6ft of 8lb trace, with the last 6ft of 6lb trace.

On the 8lb and 6lb part of the trace tie two surgeons knots and trim them off neatly. Leave only a tiny piece of excess nylon. Now tie two 6" droppers. Put a small loop on one end and the fly on the other. Pick the spot on the trace where you want to attach it i.e. just above the surgeons knot of your choice. Thread your fly through the loop, just in behind the surgeons knot on your main trace. Pull down tight and your fly is in place. The dropper can be moved at any time you want to. The first fly is the Buzzer Emerger. The second fly is Pat's Dial Back. Point fly is the Buzzer.

Cast out as far as possible and knit in as slow as you can. Concentration is the key. Watch your trace at all times. Just a small tweak and you must tighten immediately.
