SUNSHINE FLY CLUB TYING GUIDES

Bullen Merri Special (BMS)

Thread your bead through no. 8 or equivalent hook. You may need to clean the bead hole with a very small drill bit—also handy when you do bead head nymphs.

Dub on Synthetic Living Fibre ( Olive, white etc) onto black tying silk and form tail.

Add tinsel for body. Chris Myszka uses silver lining from the inside of wine casks, cut into thin strips with a scalpel. Its pliable and tough.

Don’t forget to wax the thread.

Dub on additional material onto hook to form body.

Once the body is formed, wind on the tinsel to the bead and tie off.

Tie on collar of red silk behind the head.

Fluff up the body using a bit of velcro. The photo shows one of Harold Hodge’s icy pole sticks with a bit of velcro stuck on it. It works extremely well with hare and copper flies and brings out the fibre.

Voila, the finished product. A definite fly on Lake Modewarre in winter. (This page should be available on the net in colour).
