Eildon Pondage, April.
It took me an hour to pick up Chris from St Albans. The road from journey
from work was fickle to say the least. Road-works all the way
in. Normally, I would be a little frustrated and anxious but I did not really
mind at this stage. When I get there, I’ll get there. Even the fact that young
Michael rang up to say that he would be home for the weekend did not perturb me.
Sure, I am sorry I missed him but I was at the point of no return. I would be
really happy if he came up and joined us.
Chris did not mind that I was late. We both did not mind that we were late,
traffic was bad, the roads Chockers and the drivers were nuts. We were going
fishing.
Two weeks ago we were in New Zealand for the World Championships. We did not
care if we were late, if would catch a fish or if the boat sank. We were still
on a high from this great trip. I think the trip changed us a lot. We have
nothing more to prove anymore. Bin there, done that!
It will be a great social weekend; a fish would be a bonus.
At this stage, if you want to really know, the fishing was awful. So don’t
get too excited about what follows. My boat partner hooked up on a fish and
dropped it. I saw Stuart Rees catch a fish and that’s about it.
The accommodation was great and we had a good old time having dinner and a
chat with the Yarra Valley boys. The great steaks made up for the poor fishing.
We took the best picture ever. See below. I think it’s pretty funny and not
too naughty!

Everyone was keen to hear about team Malta and their Kiwi exploits. A lot of
the single guys are now on the lookout for a Maltese wife so that they can
become Maltese citizens too! They have got no hope.

Robin and Brian did well from Sunshine. Chris and I did not manage to get a
touch from a fish. The Redfin I hooked up on just happened to be on the end of
the line when I pulled it up. The fishing had better be better next year or I
don’t think we will get the numbers. My first competition at Eildon several
years ago saw over 100 anglers, not the 40 we had this weekend. If this trend
continues, I am sure that small towns Lake Eildon And Alex will suffer the
consequences. It’s a pity, my memories of this part of Victoria are terrific
and I cut my teeth on fly fishing here as did most anglers of my vintage.
