Bullen Merri 2008

Well, I must say, there was nothing Merry about Bullen Merri this weekend. It was cold, blowy, chilly as anything and the fishing need I say, abysmal. For the International readers, this lake is an extinct Volcano , approximately 200 feet deep, 3 km long and 1.5 km wide and stocked with Quinnat Salmon, rainbow and brown trout and Australian bass.

However, the company was grand. I had a berth on Fred Godfreys boat and we managed to fish right round the lake. I managed to tease one Salmon. Well, I saw him chase the BMS but that was it. A few fish were smelting which is always nice to see. I pulled out my box of flies from New Zealand and tried several of the flies the Welsh and Irish team gave me, all to no avail.

The Salmon that you could see were in their sad spawning tones and were not interested in a feed. They were close to the shore edge and cruising in and out of the drop off.

Brian Ahearn managed an ice 4 pound salmon but the rest of the team blanked.

The barbie was grand and the highlight were Steve Radfords sausages. A good time had by all.
