Steiglitz is an old Gold mining town that nestles within the Brisbane ranges National park approximately an hours drive North West from the city of Melbourne.
Gold was first found in the ranges in the early 1850's, (the first documented map on record that showed the township, is dated 1857) the town developed from 1853 until the end of the first gold rush in the 1870's, booming again around 1890's, dwindling away in the 1940's, the last sizeable mine closed in1941 and by the 1950's, less than 100 people lived here, in present day, it has become a quiet peaceful little Hamlet with a myirad of attractive and interesting walks.
Steiglitz had a vast and varied history of transient and settled residents, some of whom had interesting stories to tell. It is these stories that we are searching for, along with documents and Photographs, if you have or know of someone who may have something to share with us please contact us as we are just starting out and need your help.
Although as yet we do not have an official home for our
Society, we are at present holding our meetings in the wonderfully restored St Pauls
Church of England in Regent Street, but hopefully after restoration is complete we
will our be moving into the old Blacksmiths house in Clow street.
All Items that are collected at present are sent to the Geelong Historical Record
Centre for safe keeping.
The Inaugural meeting of the Steiglitz Historical Society, was held on the 21st November 1999 and presently has a membership of 20.

Steiglitz Courthouse
Opened in June 1875, an almost identical Courthouse may be seen at Ballan and Lilydale, as the contractor Thomas Watt built four of these Courthouses between 1872 and 1876 at Ballan, Lexton, Steiglitz and Avenel.

The charge for basic research is AUD$5.00 per hour, 30c A4, 50c A5 photocopies, you will be notified of any other expenses.
