Douglas Spalding lived at 383 Victoria Road Gladesville. He was born at home in North Road (now Victoria Rd) Gladesville. His birth house was a few doors up from 383 and was close to the Monash Road intersection of Victoria Road.
He went to Gladesville Primary school in Victoria Road and later to Drummoyne High School. He left after the Intermediate Certificate. (Third year of high school)
Doug's first job was an apprentice Automobile Electrical Fitter with Bennett & Wood with whom he served from 28 May 1934 until 18 January 1941. On completing his apprenticeship he served in the Bennett & Wood workshop. He then obtained a position in the NSW railways as an electrical fitter until he retired in about 1978.
He liked singing and he sang in the NSW Railways Elcar choir and with a quartet. He used to race push bikes and in the early days also rode to work. He did army training during world war II.
He became a Christian - as evidenced in his bible "Douglas Peter Spalding born 29 April 1919, Born again 7th July 1941 - Praise God"
He initially worshiped at the Church of Christ in Gladesville. He met his wife (Phyllis) at St Anne's Church of England, Ryde in the bible study class.
He and Phyllis initially lived in Forsythe Street, Ryde with Phyllis' step mother (Queenie). He purchased a block of land at 2 Murray Street, West Ryde for 95 pounds in about 1945 and built a modest brick house for 1,050 pounds. The house was sold by Phyllis in 2002. At West Ryde he was involved with and regularly attended St Columb's Church of England. He became choir master and always loved singing.
In the 1970's he commenced researching the Spalding family history.
