Thomas arrived in Sydney from Glasgow on the Stirlingshire on 16 February 1884. The passenger entry records give his religion as UP, Native Place or County as Lanark with no relations in the Colony. He was listed as a Scholar aged 13. The shipping list shows the three boys, William aged 17, Peter aged 15 and Thomas aged 13, listed separately from their parents and young sisters Annie and Jane, and baby John. The boys may have been quartered with the other single men.
Marriage records for Thomas and Katie Whelan gave Thomas' middle name as Anderson.
He was a witness at brother William Spalding's wedding to Maria Carr in 1890.
Marriage: NSW BDM 5793/1894 SPALDING THOMAS A BOWMAN MARIA PADDINGTON
Maria Bowman and Thomas were second cousins. It is possible that Thomas went to Gympie because his great aunty Mary Muir (nee Spalding) had migrated to Queensland in 1862. She was living in Gympie from at least 1869.
According to verbal family history - by 1895 Thomas was manager of a gold mine in Gympie Qld. He offered his brother William a job at the mine during a labour strike in Sydney. William worked for a short time at the engineering firm of Walkers Ltd. Maryborough. It is unknown if this was where Thomas was working. Thomas' sister Ann was also in Queensland at this time and she married there.
Maria Spalding died in Gympie on 13 February 1899.
Marriage: Qld BDM 1901/C000990 Spalding Thomas Anderson, Katie Whelan
A postcard sent to Sydney had the address 'Scottish Mine, Monkland'. The Monkland mining area was within walking distance of Gympie - The Scottish Mine was backed by money raised mainly from Scotsmen and was one of the most productive gold mines in the Gympie area - from 'Gympie Gold' by Hector Holthouse.
In the 1905 Queensland Electoral Roll of Wide Bay, Monkland, Thomas Anderson Spalding lived at Brisbane Road, an engineer together with his wife Catherine Spalding, domestic duties.
In the 1913 Queensland Electoral Roll of Lilley, Gympie, Thomas Anderson Spalding lived at Brisbane Road, an engineer.
In the 1919 Queensland Electoral Roll of Lilley, Gympie, Thomas Anderson Spalding lived at Brisbane Road, an engineer with his daughter Marie Spalding, home duties.
The Qld. Post Office Directories shows Thomas living at Brisbane Road, Monkland, Gympie until sometime in 1924 - he does not appear after that and it would appear he left Queensland at that time. Almost all mining on the Gympie Goldfield ceased in 1923.
According to Helen Nash - Tom married a catholic girl who was related to Cardinal Dewey of Brisbane. They had a daughter who became a nun. If this is correct it would probably be Katies' daughter Ellen Mary Spalding. Tom also went to World War 1. Helen thought Thomas was married three times and had three children.

It is not clear if this is the child of Thomas Anderson Spalding. This needs to be confirmed.

Birth: Qld BDM 1894/C005087 Spalding Marie, Thomas Anderson, Marie Bowmann
In the 1919 Queensland Electoral Roll of Lilley, Gympie, Thomas Anderson Spalding lived at Brisbane Road, an engineer with his daughter Marie Spalding, home duties.
Marie is assumed to have been the author of a postcard sent to Miss E. Spalding, 30 Roseberry Street, Balmain, from Scottish Mine, Monkland, dated Oct. 19th (no year) The message reads:
"Mr dear Ella,
This is a photo of Dad, Annie and myself, also our new horse 'Bobbie'. He is one of our own breeding, and is one of the best trotters in Gympie. Dad was thrown out of the trap last night and he got his face cut. It is my birthday on Friday 21st, I hope you are all quite well as it leaves us at present. Write soon, Love from all."The postcard shows Thomas standing holding the horses' bridle with two girls and a woman sitting in the buggy, the woman is thought to have been their governess - obviously not thought important enough by Marie to be mentioned.
Note Qld. records Marie's birth date as 23 Oct. This may have been the day of registration.
In the 1926 death notice for her father she is referred to as Miss May Spalding.

Marriage: NSW BDM 5395/1900 SPALDING JOHN SEATON MARY SYDNEY
John and Mary were underage when they got married and so they had friends pretend to be their parents so they could get permission to marry.
John Spalding World War I Service - Gallipoli, Egypt and France
John joined D Company 3rd Battalion of the 1st Infantry Brigade of the Australian Imperial Force on 2 September 1914 as a private, with a service number of 782. He gave his birthplace as near Glasgow and age as 39 years and 11 months. (He was actually 32 years and 9 months). He was a labourer and his wife lived at 4 Botany Road Alexandria NSW. He advised that he had previously served with the St George's Rifles.
The St Georges Rifles (the 7th NSW Infantry Regiment) was the St Georges English Rifles (Volunteers). In 1908 it changed to 1st Battalion St Georges English Rifle Regiment. In 1912 it amalgamated with another regiment (1/1st Aust Inf Regt) and became the 31st Infantry (Leichhardt).
At the time of joining the AIF, John was 5 foot 11 inches tall, 148 lbs with a fair complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair. His religious denomination was Presbyterian.
It is unclear where he first served but his unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 19 October 1914. He then embarked via the "Derflinmer" to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli) on 5 April 1915. He was soon promoted to Lance Corporal on 23 June 1915.
His first hospitalisation was for influenza (Pryxia) in July 1915, initially moved to hospital Anzac and a few days later to the No.1 Australian Stationary Hospital on Lemnos Island. He was then to be transferred back to his base by the hospital ship "Dongola and Ansonia" but while on transit had to disembark on Malta. He was admitted to the Tigne Military Hospital Malta and some 5 weeks later to St Patrick's Military Hospital Malta, still with influenza.
The Secretary of Defence tried to advise John's wife of his illness but the address of his wife was misread (as 204 Botany Rd rather than No.2 Botany Rd Alexandria) and this as well as a number of other advices were returned unopened.
On 1 September 1915 John was discharged from hospital in Malta and not long after got into his first recorded trouble. He was absent without leave in Malta from 9am to 5pm on 4 September, did not comply with an order and was drunk on active service. As a result on the 8 September he was reduced to the ranks, forfeited a days pay. He then left Malta on the HT "Karos" for Egypt. On 19 September he was again involved in irregular conduct in Mustapha (North Africa) and was awarded 3 days confined to his barracks. On 27 September 1915 he left Mustapha, for the front, and joined his 3rd Battalion in Mudros, a small Greek port on the Mediterranean island of Lemnos and then to Anzac. He was promoted to Corporal on 3 December 1915.
His next illness was tonsillitis that required his transport by HS "Simla" to No.15 General Hospital Alexandria on 29 December 1915. After 11 days he was discharged to return to the Mustapha base and soon returned to his unit at Tel-el-Kebir, in Egypt.
After arriving at Tel-el-Kebir John went absent without leave. While absent Corporal John Spalding was "taken on strength", or transferred from the No.11 Platoon of the 3rd Battalion to the C Company of the 55th Battalion on 13 February 1916. After he gave himself up to the Commander of the Regimental Quarter Guard of the 55th Battalion on 8 March 1916 he found himself before a Field General Court Martial at Tel-el-Kebir on 20 March 1916. The charges were for:
1. When on active service absenting himself without leave from his Battalion from the Tattoo roll call (9.30pm) on 2 February 1916 until Tattoo (9.30pm) on 8 March 1916.
2. When on active service using insubordinate language to his superior officer, in that he at Tel-el-Kebir on 15 March when ordered to be inoculated by Capt A S C Holland of 55th Battalion AIF his superior officer, replied in an insubordinate manner "Yes, I wont".
3. When on active service disobeying in such a manner as to show willful defiance of authority of a lawful command given personally by his superior officer in the execution of his duty in that he at Tel-el-Kebir on 16 March 1916, when ordered by Captain A S C Holland 55th Battalion AIF to be inoculated, he did not do so and replied "I wont".It was noted at the Court Marshal that Corporal Spalding was a good man and reliable. He did particularly good work in the trenches on the Peninsula. His field conduct sheet was "clean". John Spalding was found guilty of 1. and not guilty of 2. and 3. His sentence was that he be reduced to ranks and detention for 90 days. This was then commuted to 90 days Field Punishment and to forfeit 36 days pay. After serving 53 days of voluntary detention in various hospitals in Tel-el-Kebir and Abbassia he left Alexandria on the HT "Ivernai" to join the British Expeditionary Force in Marseilles, France on 29 June, rejoining his 55th Battalion on 15 August 1916.
Within 6 weeks John was again admitted to hospital in France with Pleurisy and Pneumonia. On 15 October 1916 he was transferred via HS "St Andrew" from Boulogne to Frensham Hill hospital and then Aldershot Hospital in England. At last he was given a break being transferred from hospital for furlough and to report to Perham Downs depot by 8 November 1916. Unfortunately John took one extra day and found himself again charged as absent without leave and confined to camp for 7 days and to forfeit 2 days pay.
On 14 December 1916 John was off to France again leaving Folkestone on board the "Princess Henrietta" to rejoin his unit. Within 6 weeks at the front John was wounded on 31 January 1917 by shrapnel from a high explosive shell. A fragment of the shell passed through both of John's thighs about one inch above the knees causing a furrowed wound in each thigh's anterior surface. There was no injury to the bone. He was hospitalised in the 45th CCS and then the 3rd Stationary Hospital in Rouen. On 14 February he was repatriated via the HS "St Patrick" to the 2nd Birmingham Hospital, England to repair an artery and to remove shell fragments in his thighs. During this period he was noted to have had two attacks of Malaria. On 1 May 1917 he was transferred to the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield Park, Middlesex. At this stage he was not able to put any weight on his right leg.
He was discharged from hospital on 25 May 1917 being permanently unfit for general and home service. He was given 2 weeks furlough and then to report to Weymouth depot.
John finally left England on board the HMAT "Nestor" to return to Australia on 22 July 1917. He disembarked at Melbourne on 24 September and then re-embarked via "Euripides" for Sydney.
He had continual pain in both thighs and required the aid of a stick to walk. After a period of 2 months absence without leave he was eventually discharged from the AIF at Sydney as medically unfit on 23 January 1918.
John, his son William John Spalding and wife Mary Spalding all received a pension. They were living at 573 Bourke St Surry Hills NSW. It is understood that John finished up having a leg amputated when he got back to Australia.
John Spalding was awarded the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
