Stephen was an Engine Driver  - Ref Doris Jane Goddard's birth Certificate.  On his death certificate he was described as a labourer late of 15 Phillip St Balmain.

He went by the nick name of Lall.  Some family comment was that nobody ever seemed to mention him.

Jean Bailey (Collier) thought he worked at Cockatoo Dockyards.  Near his death he had very bad arthritis as she remembers him sitting in a chair in his Balmain home.  After Stephen Goddard died Jean Bailey's (Collier) mother Lizzie Collier (Goddard) took her to see him lying in his coffin in his home.

In the 1936 Electoral Roll for Martin, Gladesville, living at 383 Victoria Road was Peter McDonald Spalding, painter, and Doris Jane Spalding, home duties.

After the death of Peter Spalding, Doris married John Neish.  Doris also married Lachlan Macintosh, another Scotsman.  

In this period of her life Doris and Lachlan would spend several months a year at a camping ground at Port Macquarie and the rest of the year in 383 Victoria Road, Gladesville.

She used to attend the East Ryde C of E (St Thomas).

John NEISH

When John Neish was married, in the Church of England, on 21 February 1911 he lived at Tennyson Road, Ryde, New South Wales, Australia and was a Tinsmith.

By 1 March 1941 he lived at 104 Major Bay Rd, Concord, New South Wales, Australia, and by 2 April 1942 he lived at 52 Broughton St, Concord, New South Wales, Australia.

After his first wife died in September 1943 he then married Doris Spalding (nee Goddard) on 19 May 1945.  At that time he was a Mill Foreman and lived at Gladesville, New South Wales, Australia.

He died on 4 April 1957 Collaroy, New South Wales, Australia and is buried in the Field of Mars Cemetery.  His cause of death was of Coronary occlusion, Hypertension 275/150 - 2 years duration, Atherosclerosis - 20 years duration and Left hemiplegia - 10 years.
