Amazon Passenger List

This is a page from the Amazon Passenger List, the ship that brought our family to Australia in 1856. The ship landed at Port Adelaide, South Australia 9 April.
To the right of the green dot are recorded the names of Charles and Mary and six of their children; Arthur, Allen, Elizabeth, Mary (Ann) Stephen and Frederick.
Other family members (Charles's mother Elizabeth, his daughter Harriet and sons Alfred, Charles and William appear elsewhere on the list.
Not long after disembarking, the family settled in Mt. Barker, South Australia.

Chas and Charlotte0001.JPG (160064 bytes)

Charles and Charlotte Sherwood
 nee Batton and Family

Photographed c. 1883 more than likely at Nhill, Vic.

The photo is from an album once kept by Mary (Polly) Lynch nee Sherwood.  Mary was Charles’ niece and the daughter of Arthur and Minnie Sherwood.

The photo was sent to me by Robert Lynch of Nhill, Vic.in 1994.  Robert is Mary’s grandson.

The only wording to appear on the back of the photo is “Charles Sherwood and Family” written in   ball point pen.

Going by the children’s order of birth and matching their faces with a photo of Charles Sherwood and his son and daughters taken circa 1900, we are able to identify those in the photo.

Left to Right:  At the back is Charles Sherwood junior (1835) his son William (1869) the tallest girl on the right is Charlotte May (Cis) (1872)
On the far left with Charles’s right hand on her shoulder is Annie Mabel (1873) Next to her is Lily Mildred (1878) Charlotte Sherwood nee Batton (1845) holding Daisy Grace (1883) Seated on the far right is Agnes Mary (1875) Seated in front of Lily with her face blurred is Jessie Alphina (1880)

In 1885 a son Charles Frederick was born and died 5 months later on the 15 October 1885.  The children’s mother Charlotte  died the following year on the 15 July 1886.  Dates of birth are shown is brackets.

Arthur Sherwood's stable at Woorak West

According to Laurie Lynch, this photo  shows one end of the original stable on Arthur and Minnie's farm at Woorak West. The feed trough in the centre of the picture was one of 8 made from hollow logs and was still being used by the present owners of the property.
Laurie Lynch was a grandson of Arthur and Minnie Sherwood.
