Sherwood Morley Reunion |

In the section dealing with Charles Sherwood senior, it was
suggested that his sister Jane's decision to emigrate to Australia in
1853 may have prompted Charles and his family to do the same. Evidently
the bond between Charles and Jane was strong. Jane named one of her
sons, Charles Sherwood Morley.
Although Jane and her family settled in
Victoria and Charles and his family in South Australia, there is
evidence to suggest that members of both families met again in
Australia. According to a letter written by Florence Craker, a great
grand-daughter of Jane and Thomas Morley, we find that
Jane's daughter Hannah Morley went to stay with her grandmother,
Elizabeth Sherwood (c. 1790 -1873) in Adelaide.
Further meetings
between the two families may have taken place at Harrow and Mt.
Arapiles, Victoria from about 1875 on. It was at this time that Charles
and Mary left South Australia and settled at the foot of Mt. Arapiles
where they lived up until 1880. Thomas Morley is listed in Baillieres
Victorian Directory, as a labourer and gardener living at Harrow from
1860 through to 1870 and for the year 1875. With the Sherwoods living at
Mt. Arapiles and the Morleys at Harrow (separated by a distance of some
60 km.) it was now possible for
The following is further support for the notion that the Sherwood
and Morley families kept in touch. Graham Morley, a great, great
grandson of Jane and Thomas, has a very old family photo album. It holds
about 40 small portrait photographs, none of which have names or dates
on them. As the album belonged to Samuel Morley (one of Thomas and
Jane's sons) I was hopeful that some members of our family might appear
in it. To my delight, two photos, one of Charles and Mary and the other,
a photo of their daughter, Harriet Jarvis and her family appear in the
Morley album. It's of some interest to note that these same two photos
also appear in a very old Sherwood family photo album kept by Eva
Chambers. Eva is a great granddaughter of Charles and Mary. The photo of
Charles and Mary was taken at Mt. Barker circa 1870. The photo of
Harriet and family was taken at Mt. Barker Springs at about the same
time. A third photo of Stephen Sherwood, one of Charles and Mary 's sons, also appears in the
Morley album.
This exchange of photos, either by mail or in person, furthers the idea that the two families maintained close contact. It's quite remarkable that the first two photos mentioned have been kept by both families for well over 100 years.
