Scarecrow, 2000

TV monitor, straw, acrylic paint, black enamel, 47x42x47cm

The work consists of a TV monitor, heavily painted in black, the tube of which has been emptied and filled with straw.
Scarecrow presents a critical approach to the nowadays over - commercialised television. The commercial nature of today's television is unconditionally accepted by the majority as natural and inevitable; it is almost a blasphemy to even imagine that television could be an agent of positive social change. Originally conceived as a communicative medium television seems to have completely failed to realise its full potential. Today it is nothing but a shiny, plastic box filled with nonsensical ideas meant to turn people into nothing but mere consumers, to scare away those who dare question its status as a priest of consumerism.
