These were redesigned versions of the 50 (T524) 2-8-0 without tenders and were used by Richmond Vale Railways. In 1967 69, they hauled coal trains from Stockrington to Hexham, till the last steam hauled coal train to Hexham on 22nd September 1987. Also used by the East Greta Railways on the South Maitland Railways.

butchered to fit previous C.C. receivers in. Can only be used for light loads and will fit perfectly shunting at Port Waratah. Last two, 1904 & 1923 remained at Port Waratah until Aug 1972.

C35 class 4-6-0 (NN) (1914 1968) p 137. 3501 3535. Double headed 35s hauling long distance coal trains from Muswellbrook to
Port Waratah and the Maitland Newcastle passenger locals in the early 60s.

50 class (T524) 2-8-0. (1896 1973) 5001 5280
Saturated models released to Newcastle district non air coal trains till 1973. Redesigned versions without tenders became the 10 class above.

D59 class 2-8-2 (1952 72). 5901 5920. p 220. Operated out of Broadmeadow as pushers across the Range.
After the Goulburn line dieselized in 69 most moved to Broadmeadow working the Main North.
AD60 class 4-8-4+4-8-4 Garratt. (1952 73) p 218 6001 6042. 6004 an incomplete DJH kit. Eureka Models RTR have arrived Oct 06. Fantastic sound, detail & performance. 6035, 6040 & 6042 The Garratts were extensively operated on the Main North from Gosford to Muswellbrook. Double headed Garratts operated from Newstan Coal mine at Fassifern to Port Waratah. Garratts also operated around Werris Creek but never further south than Willow Tree as the Garratts were banned from working through the Ardglen Tunnel. The Garratts were last used on the Gosford to Newcastle line (Short North) section of the Main North. It will be hard to keep operators away from my beautiful Garratts. I most probably will run them through Ardglen as it will be very hard to resist.
Diesels
40 class A1A-A1A Alco 244 12 cyl. (1951 1971) p 214. 6 wheel bogies. Atlas RSD4/5 with Kato mechanisms and Eureka Models. By the mid 60s, the
majority of their service was secondary freights on the South and North Coast lines, and general work on the Main North as far as Armidale. Onwards from 1958, at their Chullora overhauls, they were painted Indian Red with a yellow line down the side. Bogies were painted black. (p 54 Early Diesel& Electric Locomotives of the NSWGR M Morahan). So on my mid 60s Main North layout, the 40s will be Indian Red no blue or green versions
41 class. Bo-Bo (1953 75) p 229. Later workings of these were confined to the Sydney metropolitan trip trains and local shunting duties. No operation on the Main North, no need to scratch build any of the 41s.
42 class. Co-Co General Motors EMD (1955 on) p 238. The 42s were mainly used on the Southern lines, no mention of any use on the Main North in their
later workings. No need for 42s.
421 class Co-Co EMD 16-567C (1965 on) 42101 42110, My 42107 Austrains. A re-jigged bi-directional 42. Spent all of their time on the Main Southern
then allocated to Bathurst in 1970. No operation on the Main North will have to EBay this unit maybe. It has sound and I like it. I will find a use for it on my
Main North.
422 42203, 42218 K & M mechanism (1969 EMD). Used mainly on the Main South in the early 70s so no use on the Main North.
43 class Co Co Alco 244 12 cyl EMD (1956 on) p 251. 4301 4306. My 4303 an Ian Lindsay model I think. The class was transferred to Broadmeadow in Aug 67 to work the North Coast and Northern Tablelands. Most 43s started and ended their trips at Broadmeadow, where there was an engine change to go to/from Sydney, except the express (perishables) freight from Werris Creek and many of the North Coast trains. These ran through to Darling Harbour.
44 class Co Co Alco 251C (1955 on) p 247. 4401 44100. My 4427, 4473, 4494 Trainorama (1957 Alco) North Coast line (dieselized in the
late 50s). Plenty of these 44s on the Main North especially the North Coast trains.
442 44207, 44214 Austrains (1971 Alco)
45 Class Co-Co Alco 251C 6 cyl (1962 on) 4501 4540 My 4505, 4509, 4512 4540 All AR Kits RTR (1962 Alco)
48 class Co-Co Alco 251C 6 cyl (1959 on) p 257 4801 48165. My 4801, 4827, 4868, 4887, 4889, 4891. Main West, K & M, home made, Kato modified
These locos dieselized most lines. Operated many coal and block wheat trains from Gunnedah/Werris Creek. Acted as early diesel Murrurundi bankers. Many
48s are required on the Main North.
Electrics
46 class Co+Co (1956 96) p 252 Auscision Models planned release in 2008. Steam engines were replaced by the 46 class electrics at Gosford to take
the trains up the Cowan Bank to Sydney. Another great operation on my layout at Gosford, the loco changeover
Railmotors.
620/720 Eureka Models. Many used in the Newcastle area.
CPH Casula Models kit.
Locos for Richmond Vale Railway and South Maitland Railways

70 class 0-6-0DH (1960 -84).
49 class Co-Co. EMD 567 8 cyl. (1960- on)
80 8019 Austrains (1978 Alco) will have to be placed on EBay
The very colourful NRs will only be test run on my layout.
Most of my present locos will have after market Soundtraxx sound decoders. New purchases like the Eureka Models have QSI sound, and hopefully other Aussie manufacturers will follow with RTR sound DCC, but if they dont, then after market sound decoders will be fitted.
I have come to appreciate the Alco sounds, so my 45 and 48s will have to be changed one day. My 44s have Loksound Alcos.
Some of these locos have not been released yet but hopefully I wont have to build another kit loco except for the 3 in the cupboard.
Along with my roster list, is some information collected from Leon Obergs Locomotives of Australia 1850 1990s. Page references included. As I am an era modeller, I will mainly have only the locomotives that operated in my 1967 69 era. So there will be plenty missing in the roster list. These are included in the notes below the list.
June 2006.
The Loksound sound decoders are $195 including speaker and Back EMF, are the smallest with programmable sound.
Soundtraxx Tsunami in 3613 at $140 plus speaker non Back EMF but a great sound decoder reasonably small.
Soundtraxx DSD-100LCs $65, (used to be $165) are a noisy 1st generation EMD. Half my DSD have a second decoder for the motor.
My preferred decoder installations are Lenz Back EMF motor decoders with a second sound decoder, either a DSD or a DSX.
As I want all of my locos with sound, the DSD-100LC is a cheap option but not the correct sound. I will investigate the DSD-090LCs for a correct sound especially for my Alco models. (40, 45 and 48).
My future needs.
Now with all these locos, I will hope that manufacturers will bring out more wagons/coaches or I will have to buy many kits. I already have about 50 LCH 4 wheel coal hoppers kits 20 others and about 50 bogie AR Kits wagons to build after I have started to make my new layout. Oh so much to do. Many years left for modelling I hope, as I have many years of modelling to do.
