Reviews for the Film “Metal World” Written & Directed by Neil Hughes.

“ Metal World is a visually stunning and very professional short animated film. Neil has produced a work with production values not usually achievable in a student work. His models and sets are extremely well designed and animated. He is to be commended for being able to achieve sophistication within such a short shoot time as is demanded within the one year course.

Neil obviously understands the unique difference and advantage that animated films have over live action. The ability to be able to create worlds that are complete and not compromised; pushing the boundaries over and beyond where conventional films end. Metal World is such a film where the audience are taken to another place and time.

Neil has highlighted his vivid imagery with a distinct and complimentary sound design to which he has obviously paid equal attention. The accompanying soundtrack heightens the film’s slightly horrific feel and enhances

the clinical starkness and coldness that envelops when the metal world encroaches and finally engulfs.”

“A solid piece of 3D animation with very good modeling and a well told story. The characters worked well without having to be overstated. The obvious initial comparisons with Nick Park’s work soon developed into a darkly poignant story with a universal appeal. The use of metal wires enveloping the character was beautifully done and pretty scary. At first the film seemed rather static, but soon got more sophisticated and bloomed with the excellent use of lighting and close-ups in the metal machine. There was a nice ambivalence to the ending although perhaps it was a little too anticlimatic.

The film maker should be very pleased with this work and I’m sure will have a great future making many more models and films.”
