Why Sustainability?

It is being increasingly recognised that our way of life is impacting significantly on our natural environment and resource base.

Globally, we face the very real possibility of significant climate impacts - loss of biodiversity and habitat from land clearing and development has resulted in large numbers of plant and animal species becoming endangered or extinct. Many cities of Australia regularly face water shortages. We are fast running out of oil stocks and other natural resources. Our reliance on private motorised transport impacts on our way of life, our health, and the quality of our environment. It is obvious that things have to change.

Sustainability is about meeting the environmental, social and economic needs of the present, without adversely impacting on the ability of future generations to do the same.

While the advancement of sustainability & sustainable development is not difficult, it does require that 'smart' alternatives in the way we live and work be chosen over the ‘business as usual’ approach.

Sustainability is not about growth at all costs.

Sustainability is a journey - not a destination.

Sustainability is about success.

Sustainability is about change & improvement.

Sustainability is about being smarter in the way we do things.

“Achieving sustainability does not meaning slowing down our economy.  It means speeding it up, and directing our energy toward the redesign and redevelopment of existing systems that create new opportunities for the future” Alan AtKisson, President, AtKisson Inc. 2004.

Sustainability is about recognising systems, redefining problems as challenges, identifying alternative solutions, and above all meeting the needs of people.
