Why is it my responsibility?

Surely the student should have someone at home to read to them!

Some people do believe that treating everyone the same is avoiding discrimination.  So – if all students are given notes printed off the computer, then all students with a vision impairment are given notes printed off the computer.  Isn’t it up to them to sort out how they are going to study?  After all – they will face the same issues when they get a job.

The Disability Discrimination Act, however, provides a different perspective.  Its focus is to ensure that people with a disability have the right to the same opportunities as other Australians.

Service providers must work out how to provide those opportunities to people with a disability – even if it means working out different strategies for different people.
