1.

Universal design is a set of rules that have been adopted by the government.

True or False

FALSE

Universal design is a concept that reflects a commitment to build a community where all members enjoy as many opportunities as possible.  There are seven principles of universal design which describe broad strategies for achieving universal design.

2.

Universal design was a concept that developed in the area of accessible architecture.

True or False

TRUE

Universal design was a progression from the notion of barrier-free design in architecture.  Leaders in the field believed that rather than have special measure to provide access to buildings, designing options for all people would produce better results, with probably less time and cost.

3.

Universal design is an American idea that has no relevance here.

True or False

The term 'universal design' was coined by Ron Mace, from the North Carolina State University's Centre for Design. Ron's work as an architect and designer reflected the progression of approaches to designs that provide access and remove barriers.  Many people with a disability experience barriers across the world, and an approach that looks at benefiting not just these people, but the community as a whole, must have value here.

4.

Universal design of learning resources is becoming a significant aspect of how education and training providers are looking at equity strategies.

True or False

TRUE

The use of the term 'universal design' in conjunction with learning resources is becoming more frequent.  Higher education, vocational training, and school systems are now looking at how to design resources that have greater benefit to a more diverse learner base.  Advances in technology open up options for preparing better designs.

5.

Universal deign means coming up with one option that will suit most people.

True or False

FALSE

Universal design is about making it easier to accommodate the needs of individuals, and perhaps offering a range of options so that people can make a choice based on what works for them.
