Generally the most commonly used font size is around 10-12pt – too small for many people with low vision. Large print is generally described as 16 - 18pt (Starks & Higgins, 2001; Arditi, 1999).
You can produce materials in large print in a variety of ways. Sometimes materials are enlarged on photocopiers, usually onto A3 paper. This is not really suitable for bulky texts, as the result is heavy and cumbersome.
If materials are available in an electronic format, then you can increase the font size and reprint the materials. This can be successful, providing the layout is workable. Complex tables, for instance, can be difficult to read without a lot of reformatting. |
