How this studio came to be built The basic imperative for taking on principles of Universal Design is legislative – the Disability Discrimination Act 1990 makes it unlawful to treat a person unfairly due to a disability. However, the greater benefit is of having resources from which all learners learn and understand more. There is potential for greater success across all learners, for less need for teachers to intervene, and for easier communication between staff and students. While the end product of this project will be a resource, the real value of the project could be in the process of development, and the resulting adoption of the principles by those who develop or buy learning resources. In 2003, a study was done of the demand for conversion of learning materials into accessible formats. The study looked at work funded by the state government's VET Disability Support Service, as well as work arranged by TAFE Disability Support Officers. Findings
