DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System)

One of the drawbacks of books on audio tape has always been finding the right point on the tape, especially with reference books.  DAISY allows easy navigation, using the structure of the book.

A DAISY book can include a narration of the text, a fully marked-up copy of the text, and synchronisation between them.  The user could search for words or phrases, and see the text displayed on the screen whilst listening to the corresponding narration.

The National Information Library Service (NILS) produces resources in DAISY format.

According to their web site:

Our vision is that all published information is available to people with print disabilities, at the same time and at no greater cost, in an accessible, feature-rich, navigable format.
