Files in Portable Document Format (PDF) are commonly used
on the web as they retain their structure across computers, making it easy to
preserve print layout.
A common request for conversion of materials centres on
access to PDF files supplied by publishers.
Several years ago, these files were inaccessible to people
who used screen readers.
Newer versions of both Adobe and screen reading software
now make PDF files more accessible. Acrobat Reader 6.0 includes a simple text-to-speech
reader, as well as the ability to convert the file to text.
The level of accessibility of PDF files still depends on
how they are created. See the resources at the
bottom of this page for more information on this.
It remains a good policy to offer documents in an
alternative format (eg. text or Word document files, or HTML) when providing PDF
versions.
