NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 1998

Welcome to the first Newsletter for 1998. Your executive has a very active agenda planned for this year with some interesting and varied speakers planned for our dinner meetings.

Our first speaker for this year is Dr Karlis Gross. He has spent the last 10 years investigating various aspects of hydroxyapatite coatings and his two research based degrees have addressed different aspects of plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings.

NEW!

Free-For-All

We have planned some exciting changes for this meeting. Prior to the address by the guest speaker, there will be a brief question and answer free-for-all. This will provide a great opportunity to ask any questions you might about any aspect of implantology and to share any suggestions or clinical hints with your colleagues. This is an audience-participation session, and promises to be an exciting and fun learning experience.

Bring your questions. Bring your hints. Bring your friends.

A more interactive and friendly ‘round-table’ table arrangement will be used, so that everyone attending will be able to see and talk to one another much more easily.

If you would prefer to have your question put forward anonymously, jot it down and give the paper to any of the committee members. Don’t be concerned that your question is too basic –if it’s worrying you it is probably worrying other members.

This dinner meeting is sponsored by Steri-oss and there will a table presentation of the range of Steri-oss products on view prior to the dinner.

The planned dinner meeting dates for the remainder of the year are:

Wednesday May 27, August 26, and November 25.

Special Notice : Implant Team Training Seminar

Westmead Hospital

Saturday May 23

All members and their dental assistants, hygienists and technicians are invited to attend this innovative course designed to involve the dental team in an understanding of the procedures involved in implant placement.

Your Society is once again proud to take the initiative in designing and presenting another course aimed at furthering the knowledge and education of all members of the implant team. Whilst this course is aimed at the other members of the Dental Team, members are encouraged to also attend if they so desire. This course will be of great interest, even if you are not currently actively involved in implant placement . It will enable your staff to understand all the implant procedures so that they can adequately explain them to patients.

Members and their staff will receive a brochure and application form shortly.

Level 1 and 11 training course Perth March 11-13 .

Members will already have received brochures for the above courses to be held immediately prior to the ADA Congress in Perth . These two courses, together with the Level 111 which will be held later, are prerequisites for the ASID Accreditation Programme , another initiative of ASID .

Members who have already attended a Level 1 or 11 programme before and who would like to attend again as a refresher are encouraged to do so. There will be a 25% discount for prior attendees.

Members are reminded that the lecture programme is outstanding with an excellent panel of presenters.

Yellow Pages Referral

As an experiment, the NSW Branch placed an advertisement in the Yellow Pages with an answering service for people requesting information on dental implants. Already there has been an active response to the advertisement seeking information and names of practitioners for referral.

To enable a list of names to be set up, a form was sent out with the last Newsletter and members who had completed the Accreditation Programme and been accredited and are actively involved in implant procedures, could elect to be added to that list if they wished. If you are accredited and wish to be added to the list and have not already done so, please return the enclosed form and have your name added to the list for referrals.

Reciprocal Assistance Programme

As mentioned in the last Newsletter, the ASID (NSW Branch) is setting up this programme of mutual help. Whether you are very experienced or have very little experience, you can be involved in this programme. If you haven’t sent in your form from the last Newsletter, return the enclosed form, and all those interested will be contacted with the names of those wishing to be involved.

Newsletter Advertising

As a means of reducing the cost of production of the Newsletter, it has been decided to accept advertisement to help defray the cost. If members have any potential advertisers they are requested to contact the secretary.

TIT-BITS by Dr. Tony Collins

Despite radiographic experts constantly asserting that CT Scans are accurate and can provide exact measurements for implant dental purposes, we frequently hear of practitioners disputing this, citing cases where they have found inaccuracies in measurements derived from CT Scans.

To my knowledge there have not yet been any cases of major structures being damaged as a result of a practitioner blindly and in good faith placing an implant of a size assessed by CT, but which, in reality, is too large. But it may possibly happen.

A recent study by Kohavi, Bar-Ziv and Marmary have found cases where the geometry of the patient in relation to the scanner can give cross-sectional images which appear to be at variance with the clinical situation.

It is usual for transaxial slices to be taken parallel to a reference plane such as the lower border of the mandible or the occlusal plane. Cross-sectional views are reconstructed at right angles to the transaxial slices and ideally should occupy the same plane as the intended implant placement for accurate measurements

Three dried human mandibles were scanned, firstly with the lower border perpendicular to the floor, then with angles of 10 and 20 degrees introduced. 107 measurements were made for each angulation. These measurements were compared with measurements taken directly from the mandibles using electronic calipers. For measurements taken parallel to the lower border the mean difference was 0% (sd 3.60), with a range of -10% to +10%, for the 10 degree tilt, 1% (sd 4.56) with a range of -9% to 15% and for the 20 degree tilt, 2.84% (sd 8.03) with a range of -31% to +26% between the scans and the specimens.

The authors recommend that even where the patient is positioned accurately to the reference plane an allowance of about 10% should be made for the maximun calculated length of the implant in order to avoid important anatomic structures.
