WELCOME TO 2002-A YEAR PROMISING TO BE FULL OF INFORMATIVE COURSES RELATED TO IMPLANT DENTISTRY.

The promotion and sharing of knowledge in the field of Implant Dentistry is a vital aim of this group. It is a group dating back to 1969 and has no affiliation with a specific implant system, but looks to glean and disseminate the best knowledge available in the field of Implant Dentistry within its membership.

Last September, under the leadership of Federal President, Dr Gerald Marish, the A.S.I.D. launched a Victorian State Branch in Melbourne. In Western Australia, a State Branch Study Group was established with its first meeting held on November 7th 2001. Dr. Payne may be contacted for further information on branch activities.

After lengthy preparation and considerable effort by Committee member, Dr. Tony Collins, a LEVEL IV Course was held for the first time, at Sydney University. Ten dentists and two dental students were active with anatomy lectures given by Dr. Fiona Stewart, of the Anatomy Dept., the Medical Faculty of Sydney University. In this ground-breaking Course, all students had the availability of actual hands-on surgery whilst attending the Course. Implants were placed, along with Sinus-lift, bone grafting and suturing techniques. Those attending considered this Course a valuable learning experience.

On March 20th, a State Branch was established in South Australia. Dr. Ian Bills presented the first lecture, "Doing your own Surgery", to forty-eight dentists from the locality. At this meeting, Dr. Robert Bickmore..was elected as Branch President.

Recently, plans have been confirmed for the 7th Accreditation Course to be held in Melbourne at the Carlton Crest Hotel. The LEVEL I Course is scheduled for Friday, May 31st, with LEVEL II being held on Saturday June 1st, and Sunday June 2nd. In the past, these Courses have been well attended and give good fundamental knowledge of Implant Dentistry for Practitioners to use in their own Surgeries.

The LEVEL III Course is scheduled for Friday 18th, Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th October 2002, in Sydney at the Carlton Crest Hotel.. This course covers treatment planning, surgery, prosthodontics, maintenance and repair. Dr. Joseph Kan will present this Course. Members are advised that membership of ASID carries with it the benefits of component membership of the ICOI- International College of Oral Implantologists. There are often Implant Conferences around the world that are run by this group and to which our members are welcome at discounted rates. An example is the joint meeting of the Canadian Society of Oral Implantology & The ICOI, to be held this August23-25 2002, in Montreal, Canada.

Your Federal Council is currently working on a similar affiliation with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, whose next meeting is to be held in Los Angeles, October2-6, 2002. We await further details.

Members are invited to contribute any "snippits" which they think are of value to the membership and which may be published in future Newsletters.
