The Story of Creation according to Genesis 1.

PRIMORDIAL CHAOS.
quot; Now the earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep, and God's Spirit hovered over the waters." (Genesis 1:1) The golden image, evocative of birth and motherhood is interpenetrating with the underlying watery chaos, a confused and formless void. Acrylic and oil on canvas 61x84cm.

First Day.
"God said, 'Let there be light', and there was light. God saw that light was good, and God divided light from darkness. God called light 'day' and darkness He called 'night'. Evening came and morning came: the first day." (Genesis 1:3-5))
The pattern of light and dark in this painting is evocative of a chaos pattern generated on a computer. Implied in chaos is a possibility of emerging order, referring to 'implicate order', which is a beautiful idea expounded by the eminent physicist David Bohm. He has a vision of the Universe as an undivided whole in which each of the 'parts' we perceive contains in some holographic way everything else, including the past and the future. Thus even in the beginning the seeds and promise of future order were contained in the most basic division of light and dark..
The Name of God, ELOKIM, is present on the light, signifying
that God upholds the Universe in existence by his mighty power.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Second Day
" God said, 'Let there be a vault in the waters to divide the waters in two.' And so it was. God made a vault , and it divided the waters above the vault from the waters under the vault. God called the vault 'heaven'. Evening came and morning came : the second day." (Genesis 1:6-8) God's Name, "Elokim" is present above the water to signify His intimate presence in all creation..
-----------------------------------------------------

Third Day
God separated the waters under heaven and let dry land appear, created plants with seeds to bear their own kind.(Gen. 1 :9-13))
God's Name ELOKIM, written in Hebrew, appears in the depths
of the seas, signifying His presence in all Creation.
----------------------------------------------------------------

THE FOURTH DAY
God created the sun, the moon and the stars. (Gen. 1 :14-19))
Elohim, God's Name in Hebrew, is painted in the dark blue of the night sky, signifying that His presence is upholding the Universe..
---------------------------------------------------------------

The Fifth Day
God filled the waters with living creatures and the air with every kind of winged creatures. (Gen. 1 :20-23))
Elohim, God's Name in Hebrew, is painted in the cloud at the top of the painting. Blue, vibrant lines of energy radiate towards all the creatures of air and sea, filling the whole world with the power of the Creator..
Oil on canvas 61x84 cm.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sixth Day
"God said, 'Let the earth produce every kind of living
creature: cattle, reptiles and every kind of wild beast.' And so it was. "
"God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created
him, male and female he created them.";
This painting is in the manner of a child's story book, to stress the importance of understanding this biblical descripton of creation as a STORY, not to be confused with a scientific description and thus avoiding the unnecessary conflict between the biblical description and the current scentific theory of evolution. A story contains a TRUTH which points beyond its literal meaning, and it is in this sense that this is a 'true story', not in the sense that 'this is exactly the way all things were made'. God is the Source of all that is, holding all beings in existence from within their deepest essence..

Day Seven, the Shabbath
The completion of creation is the culmination of the biblical story. "God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he rested after all his work of creating." (Genesis 2:1-3))
This is the day we are called to consider more deeply than ever the things of eternity. T.S.Eliot's beautiful poem "Four Quartets" gives us food for thought::
'Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past.'
This describes poetically the concept of time in the Theory of Relativity developed by Albert Einstein: all time is present at once, it is only our own limitations which oblige us to consider events in sequence. The symbolism of the white rose, representing perfection and purity is used to represent all creation.
The white rose is united with the flames of fire representing the consummation of union with God and the return of all to its Origin and Destiny..
"...When the tounges of flame are in-folded
Into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one.";
"Four Quartets" T.S.Eliott
The plaited candles are used by religious Jewish people at the end of the Sabbath, to farewell the angels of the Sabbath who stay with the family for this holy day. The many strands of this Havdalah candle burn with a single flame, just as the family with all its members is united in the love of God during the celebration of the Sabbath. The spiralling, transparent images represent the angels who are with the family. Angels are spiritual beings, so very different from human beings that representing them as men with wings seems quite inadequate..
