The image is based on the Book of Revelations, a series of visions recorded in the last book of the New Testament, Ch. 6.

When the seven seals are broken, four horsmen appear in succession when they are called. The rider of the white horse carries a bow, the rider of the red horse is given a huge sword, the black horse carries a rider with a pair of scales. The fourth horse is "...deathly pale, and its rider was called Plague, and Hades followed at his heels."
