DAVID IS ANOINTED BY SAMUEL

In the presence of his father Jesse, and his seven brothers David was anointed . Samuel was reluctant to go when God sent him to anoint David, fearing that king Saul might kill him for anointing another person as king of Israel. God told Samuel to take a heifer and say that he is going to show sacrifice to God, so Saul would not suspect him.

David and Jonathan Make a Pact.

King Saul's son, Jonathan, loved David and gave him his sword, shield, bow, and belt. They promised to be friends for ever and to help each other. The head of the wolf on the belt signifies that Jonathan is from the tribe of Benjamin, whose symbol is the wolf.

He was seeking protection from their common enemy, Saul. The king gave David refuge, but the people complained that David was the one who killed their hero, Goliath, so he must be a spy. David pretended to be mad, letting his saliva run down his beard. In many eastern cultures madmen are not harmed, they are thought to be blessed by God in some special way, so he was allowed to stay for a while.
