The Clockwork Universe

122x96.5 cm.acrylic on canvas $1,200 AUD
With the help of the Newtonian concept of the universe as a great clockwork set in motion by God, the forces of nature were understood and made to work for man. This gave rise to the great celebration of science at the Paris Exhibition (Eiffel Tower, smiling face). The logical consequence of the Clockwork Universe, howerever, revealed man as a mere part of the machinery and led to despair (sad face, gun triggered by clockwork), the industrial revolution (factory) .Ddespite all the good it brought about, the Industrial Revolution caused a devaluation of human life. This is symbolised very strongly by the small parts of babies scraped out of their mothers' wombs in abortion, and spewing out of the factory chimney.
