VAV |
| VAV is the sixth letter of the Aleph-Beit, so its numerical value is six. Its form is like a pillar, like a man standing upright, and also like a hook. The name vav means hook. The significance of each of the above is indicated on the painting and explained as follows: The six 'wings' of the Star of David, and the six wings of the fiery angels, the seraphim, the six hooks of the pillars and the six powers of the heart related to the six sephirot. The upright letter, being like a man standing upright, represents the people of Israel, standing together, united in their love of God and observing His laws. In this state of total love, a human being is in perfect balance, symbolised by the golden pillar in the centre. The diagram of circles and connecting paths is the Tree of Life, as passed down to us through the Kabbalah. This is from the mystical teaching of Judaism about the path which shows us the ideal purpose or meaning of life, on how to evolve spiritually. The six circles painted blue are the six powers of the emotions of the heart associated with six 'sephirot', or gateways through which we pass on this journey to God. BEAUTY (TIFERET) is the quality of the person who is in total harmony with God and his fellow human beings through love. LOVINGKINDNESS (CHESED) urges a person to share the teachings of God with his/her fellow human beings, helping them to a stage where they want to live righteously out of their own inner motivation rather than because they were taught to do certain things by traditions. THE MIGHT (GEVURAH) of DISCIPLINE, DISCRIMINATION and JUSTICE which enable us to make day to day decisions and judgements on how to live our lives, what to do in all situations in relation to our fellow human beings, what to keep and what to discard in our own lives. THANKSGIVING, which gives GLORY (HOD) to God through the right understanding of our relationship to Him. HOD is associated with the accumulation of factual knowledge, but can also reveal to us the realisation that all we have and are comes as a gift from God. This will urge us to give thanks at all times. VICTORY (NETZACH) of achievement in completing our tasks in this life, especially expressing our feelings through works of art. FULFILMENT resting on the FOUNDATION (YESOD) of our innermost unconscious feelings. When we achieve this fulfilment, we are enabled to discard all our masks and pretences, face our inner fears and can perceive the deepest meanings of stories and myths. The curtains of the Tabernacle represent the concealment of higher worlds from lower worlds, the six pillars in the upper part of the painting are the symbols of the light of revelation channelled from these higher levels to the lower levels. The hooks of the pillars are making the connection between the apparent opposites of concealment and revelation. Their ultimate purpose is the continuing, ever deeper revelation of God's mysteries. |
