TAV

The final letter of the Aleph-Beit resembles the form of a seal used when a letter is completed. For this seal I used the symbol of the thirteen-petalled rose, referred to in the opening lines of the Zohar, a text of ancient Jewish wisdom. This rose-symbol contains great mysteries about Divine Wisdom, Love and the relationship of God and His people, Israel. It is painted in the colour of unconditional love, in a stylised form to emphasise the great power of a symbol containing a lot of meaning and pointing beyond itself. TAV is the final letter of the word for TRUTH. This word in Hebrew is made of three letters: ALEPH, the first letter which is a symbol for God, MEM, a letter from the centre of the Aleph-Beit, and TAV, the final letter. This teaches us that TRUTH encompasses all reality, from beginning to end. When the ALEPH is missing, MEM and TAV spell the Hebrew word for DEATH, i.e., if God is missing, truth becomes death. The roses on the right of the painting refer to the beauty of truth and the unity between TRUTH and BEAUTY in the ONE Who Is. On the left, however, thorns are growing among the roses, symbolising how the cares of this world can distract our attention from the Divine Truth and without God the beautiful rose is choked. This is spiritual death. The central, light area is evocative of the pillar of cloud in Exodus, signifying God's presence and leading the children of Israel from the bondage of Egypt to freedom. This is not only an historical account of the story of the Israelites, but also a symbol for each individual soul's journey towards God, from the bondage of ignorance to the Light. C.G. Jung describes this spiritual journey as "individuation", the development from a state of infantile unconsciousness to the fully adult state of total consciousness. In texts about the spiritual life, the word "superconsciousness" is used to describe the state reached by some very highly developed people who are totally immersed in Divine Love. The state of contemplation of these people (sometimes referred to as mystics) floods them with Divine Light, an intimate knowledge of God beyond all description: this is the ultimate goal of our journey from ignorance (the bondage of Egypt) to Eternal Light (the total freedom of the Promised Land). This is the goal of ALL human life. The letters of the Aleph-Beit are ascending to (or descending from) Heaven, like the angels in Jacob's dream. Each letter has some unique teaching for us, just as each angel carries a unique message. When we have listened to the lessons of all the letters from ALEPH to TAV, at the end of this spiritual journey we realise that "there is more", so the process of learning is continued at higher and higher levels, reaching towards the Infinite. The Aleph-Beit begins again after TAV and continues, reaching ever higher into the distance, up the "stairs" of Divine Mysteries.
