SAMECH |
|
This is one of the two completely enclosed letters of the Hebrew Aleph-Beit (the other is MEM). It is taught in Kabbalah that when God carved the Ten Commandments in the stone, the letters went right through the stone, yet the middle of these two letters did not fall out: it was miraculously supported, showing that God's support is present in all circumstances. SAMECH is the letter of support and it teaches us that the whole of creation is sustained by the Divine Presence and order is maintained in spite of the natural tendency of all closed systems towards disorder (entropy). The form of SAMECH resembles a ring with an inner and outer circle on its boundaries, it is likened to a wedding ring. The inner circle is a symbol for God who is without beginning or end. There is nothing inside the circle, signifying that God is NO-THING, i.e., God cannot be described fully by anything that we can know or say. The letters MEM and SAMECH are on either side of the letter NUN, and are said to support NUN. The letters of the name SAMECH spell "support" and contain the letters which are used for the words "welfare" and "encouragement", showing us a deep connection between these three concepts. The circle is contained in the square of MEM, the hexagon within the circle. The secret of the two letters MEM and SAMECH is the revelation of the Divine in the Coming World and the Future to Come. The first is the revelation about the Divine order, comprehensible to past and present generations. The second is the absolute revelation, the secret of SAMECH, totally beyond comprehension at present. The bride at the wedding points her finger as the ring (SAMECH) is put on it. She is said to be pointing to the Future to Come. The ring, a union of two halves, is the symbol of the mysterious union in God's presence between man and woman which enables them to realise (i.e. make REAL) the secret of SAMECH. It is in the intimate love of marriage union, sanctified by God, that we are closest to the great mystery of God's Love. The points on the circle are all at the same distance from the centre, showing that all souls are equally close to God. The sides of the hexagon are exactly the same length as the radius of the circle. This simple geometry teaches us that our closeness to God is exactly the same as our closeness to our fellow human beings. The six sides of the hexagon also symbolise the 600,000 archetypal Jewish souls who left Egypt and accepted God's Covenant at Sinai. On the painting, the twelve tribes of Israel are shown within the outermost circle in shades of red and blue. The tiny, flickering pieces of mica represent the individuals present at Sinai. The names of the twelve tribes of Israel are written around the outer circle, this signifies that the whole nation of Israel acted as one when they accepted the Law and the Covenant with God. The great mystery of the many levels of worlds is like circles within circles, as shown on the painting. The outermost circle refers to both the teaching of modern Physics about a finite Universe that has no beginning or end, and the wisdom of Ecclesiastes. The beginning and the end are enwedged in each other, like a snake holding its own tail. "Their end is enwedged in their beginning and their beginning in their end." |
