KUF |
| This letter is the nineteenth of the letters of the Aleph-Beit and its numerical value is 100. The significance of 19 is that the name of Eve (Chavah) also has the same value and this draws our attention to our connectedness to the earth through the "mother of all life". It is through her partaking of the Tree of Knowledge that sin came into the world but by her action it became necessary that the Redeemer, the Messiah, should also come to ransom humanity. The numerical value of KUF is 100. According to legend, the eagle lives for 100 years. Every 10 years it soars towards the sun, but returns, until it is 100. Then it flies so close to the sun that it is burnt up by it. This is symbolic of our spiritual journey towards God, as we draw closer and closer to Him at the various stages of our lives, until we are finally drawn into the flame of His all-consuming Love to be united with Him. The ten times ten is also a symbol of completion and perfection. Abraham is said to have been 100 years old when his son Isaac was born. In the painting, on the left, the eagle is soaring; and, on the right, Abraham is holding up his newborn son, offering him to God. This son is to be the father of Jacob whose twelve sons are the fathers of the twelve tribes of Israel. The blues and purples of the painting are the colours associated in my mind with holiness and spiritual love. The three letters near the top of the painting spell a Name of God in Kabbalah. This Name is associated with the soul's relationship to God: LAMED soars upward, describing the soul's journey up to God. KUF reaches down to tell us about the soul's journey to earth to fulfil its mission in life, while YUD, hovering in space, neither up nor down, describes the final state of salvation in knowing-not knowing the Divine. |
