KAF

The spelling of the name of this letter means 'palm', the aspect of the hand to make what is 'potential' into 'actual'. This can refer to God continually creating the Universe which would cease to exist without His constant support. Scripture says, "You have placed Your Palm over me." The wearing of the kipah (skullcap) is a sign of awareness of the presence of God's "Palms" over our heads, a reminder of His ongoing creation of man. The word KAF, palm, is also used as an image for clouds. Moses had to pass through the cloud on his way to the mountain of God. The cloud shields the brilliance of light from our weak sight, yet it is an expression of the great latent powers of nature. Clouds filling the sky as if the Creator's "Palms" were stretched over us are a reminder of the constancy of His love for us, and that our essence is rooted in Him. "I have carved you on the palm of My Hand". THE NUMERICAL VALUE OF THIS LETTER IS 20. Joseph was sold by his brothers for 20 pieces of silver, with which they bought shoes to cover their feet. This is symbolic of our inclination to indulge the lowest of our physical desires, resulting in enslaving our spirit. Palms upturned are the vessels for receiving God's gifts. The ten pairs of upturned palms refer to the ten sefirot, which are the channels of Divine Energy, or the imprints of God's creativity on reality. THE FORM OF THE LETTER. The highest, or first of the sefirot is keter, CROWN. In the letter kaf, the three lines connected with rounded corners resemble a crown lying on its side. The king bowed down in total, loving submission to God, is our example and leader. God's chosen people are in fact called to be a royal priesthood and kingly nation, to lead the world by example, to observe God's Commandments, His loving instructions for our well-being. The three crowns in the centre of the painting are the crown of kingship, the crown of priesthood and the crown of Torah. They are surrounded by a fourth crown, esteemed above all, the crown of a good name. The three lines of the letter correspond to the three levels of Divine-human relationship: 1.Absolute, simple faith - a trust in God's Providence that in both our individual lives and in the whole of creation the highest good of all will be achieved. 2.Sublime pleasure - God's delight in each one of us, each being a unique reflection of His beauty, and our ecstasy of joy in being united to Him. 3.Total unity of will - this implies also the potential of the one thus united to God to have power over reality through his/her own will. At the end of a word, kaf has a different form, it is straightened up, becomes a long, tall letter. This final kaf indicates that when we give ourselves over to our God in total, loving submission, He will raise us to the realization of the height of our full potential. The black roses tumbling from the sky are symbolic of the hidden gifts which we receive from God in the form of suffering and difficulties in life. Although at the time when these things happen, we seem to pass through dark times, in fact these 'black roses' are opportunities of learning and personal, spiritual growth.
